About Judy

As WP's managing editor, I edit review and preview articles, attempt to keep up with the frantic pace of Rainier's news posts, and keep our reviewers on deadline, which is akin to herding cats. When I have a moment to myself and don't have my nose in a book, I like to play action/RPG, adventure and platforming games.

'Darwinia' - Screens

by Judy on Aug. 25, 2004 @ 9:49 a.m. PDT

Combining fast paced action with strategic battle planning, Darwinia features a novel and intuitive control mechanism, an '80s retro classics graphical style, and a story concerning a tribe of video game sprites trapped in a modern 3D game world.

Nearly three years after taking the underground gaming scene by storm with the release of the hacker simulation Uplink, Introversion Software is poised to release its follow up title, Darwinia during the first part of 2005.

Combining fast-paced action with strategic battle planning, Darwinia features a novel and intuitive control mechanism, a graphical style ripped from '80s retro classics like Tron and Defender, and a story concerning a tribe of nomadic sprites trapped in a modern 3D world.

The world of Darwinia is a surreal and retro place, filled with epic fractal vistas and populated by iconic video game sprites from the past twenty years of computer games. The world is locked in warfare and on the verge of self-destruction, as the once peaceful Darwinians are besieged by a massive Red Viral onslaught. Against the backdrop of this war, this game within a game takes place.

Darwinia is set to become one of the most talked about PC releases of 2005. Its retro touches will enthral game geeks hankering for a taste of the old school. Darwinia's stunning landscapes made up of vector lined mountain peaks and fractal generated forests will surprise many. Dedicated Real Time Strategy fans wanting to do battle somewhere other than Europe during the Middle Ages will love Darwinia's intriguing cyber plot line.

As part of the European Games Network to be held at ExCel, London between 1st – 3rd September, Introversion Software will be presenting Darwinia to the trade for the first time. Playable code of Darwinia will be available to sample on Stand 216 – Pinnacle Software on the EGN floor.
