Xbox 360 Review - 'Disney Infinity' Rapunzel Figure

by Brian Dumlao on March 4, 2014 @ 3:00 a.m. PST

Disney Infinity allows players to experience original adventures in some of their favorite Disney and Pixar worlds and to build their own worlds using the power of their imagination.

As the 50th film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics line, "Tangled" was a huge commercial success. It performed well in the worldwide box office, it was nominated for several prestigious film awards, and it gained approval from critics and filmgoers. It also gave the company a new marketable character in the form of Rapunzel, a loveable character whose naiveté and curiosity about the world made her endearing instead of ditzy. As one of the more requested modern characters, she debuts in Disney Infinity, and like many of the singular characters in the game, she's only compatible in the Toy Box.

The physical figure is frozen in what looks to be a dancing pose, and her hair still remains the focal point of her character, with numerous flowers braided throughout it. She stands at an average height compared to the other figures, roughly the same height as the figures from The Lone Ranger, and the amount of detail, from the patterns on the dress to the royal family emblem on the base, are stunning. Like most of the figures based on animated characters, her appearance is really close to the film version to the point that even non-gaming fans of the film would want this item in their collections.

In-game, Rapunzel sports a decent amount of animations when idle. While she isn't a very talkative person, the lines she spouts are true to character; this is helped by the fact that she's still voiced by Mandy Moore in the game. Her attacks are varied in type but are all centered around her skillet. In melee range, she can unleash a skillet attack combo that has her jumping in various positions before ending with a circular spin. From a distance, she throws her skillet in a straight line. Unfortunately, she has no other packs or tools to speak of, and that's a shame for those who were hoping for an appearance from her chameleon friend Pascal, especially since she seems to talk to him in a few of her lines.

Like many of the other characters, Rapunzel has a Toy Box adventure challenge of her own. In this case, she's tasked with collecting as many lanterns as she can within the time limit. While there are a few places where light platforming is necessary and her tower is fully featured in the level — complete with a long hair-like rope to the top — the focal point of the level is the various rails. Some light jumping and rail switching is necessary to obtain the necessary lanterns for the gold medal, but the lines created by the rails make it a perfect way to go through the level, which has plenty of textures from "Tangled" and a nice lantern-filled skyline. Some of the instrumental songs from the film are even playing in the background. The only real disappointment about the level is that it feels like it ends too quickly and it's rather easy to earn the gold medal, so you're left with nothing else unique to the Rapunzel figure to fall back on.

The Rapunzel figure occupies the same state as the Jack Skellington figure in that only the more hardcore collectors or completionists will want to nab her immediately. Her lone collection challenge is nice, and if you're lucky enough to have obtained all of the Tangled-related power discs so far, you're pretty much set as far as making Tangled-themed levels in the Toy Box. Otherwise, with no real world to call her own, Rapunzel can be easily lost amid the other characters.

Score: 7.0/10
