Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes features more than 20 new interactive figures from across the Marvel universe, original storylines penned by award-wining Marvel comic writer Brian Michael Bendis, and an all-new Toy Box mode that makes it easier for players to create and share their one-of-a-kind levels and mini-games with family and friends. In addition, all characters and power discs from last year’s release of Disney Infinity will be compatible with the Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes Toy Box.
Disney Infinity executive producer John Vignocchi was in San Francisco Wednesday night in order to give a sneak preview of Disney Infinity 2.0 to a movie theater full of Disney D23 Fan Club members.
Vignocchi started off by telling the crowd how successful Disney Infinity has been for the company. According to his presentation, Infinity has been popular with families, but the real draw was the open-ended toy box mode. With millions of user-created levels uploaded and shared by players, the toy box is a seemingly endless source of new content. As a result, Vignocchi highlighted some of the new additions to the toy box, including the ability to quickly, procedurally generate new levels, builder options to auto-create specific items and a fairly in-depth indoor design tool.
Next up were first looks at the two new characters Maleficent and Merida.
The Maleficent toy is sculpted after the Angelina Jolie version of Maleficent, rather than the original animated version. In-game, Maleficent has use of a black horse (presumably this is Diaval, her shapeshifting companion in the new film) as well as her staff. The staff can be used to fire off Maleficent’s trademark green magic, zapping enemies at a distance.
Merida’s sculpt looks like it could have been pulled from a Pixar render, complete with her bright red hair and ever present bow. It’s the bow that Merida will use most often in game, hitting targets with her arrows. The gameplay trailer was short, but Merida’s in-game movements seemed to capture the independent streak which defined the character in Brave.
Vignocchi also touched on the Disney Infinity 2.0 starter pack. We already know that the starter pack includes Black Widow, Iron Man, Thor and the Avengers playset, but it also includes two mini-game tiles. One of these is still officially unannounced, but the other is a tower defense game set in Asgard. Vignocchi mentioned that more of these new mini-game tiles will be made available in the new game.
