'Final Fantasy' Free Download via Android Portal App

Players guide the Warriors of Light as they set out on a quest to restore the crystals to their former luster. Its side view battles, choice and promotion of character classes, and sprawling world explored with fantastic vehicles quickly became standards of the series.

Initially released in Japan in 1987, the original Final Fantasy amazed audiences with its rich story and stunning graphics, and set the stage for all Final Fantasy games to come.

Earlier this month, Square Enix Japan released the Final Fantasy Portal App on the Japanese Google Play Store.

Serving as a hub for all things Final Fantasy, the app also offers a free download of the original Final Fantasy. Most importantly, the version of the game included in the portal app plays in English and it also works on Android 5.0 “Lollipop.” The existing version of Final Fantasy in the US Play Store reportedly has issues working on Android 5.0.

There is no word on how long the promotion will last, so if you want to snag your own copy of Final Fantasy at no charge, this is how to go about it:

  1. Create a new Google account (one that has not made any purchases).
  2. Install Hola Free VPN on your device.
  3. Run Hola and set the Play Store region to Japan.
  4. Launch the Settings app on your device.
  5. Go to your App Manager and Force Stop the Play Store.
  6. Clear all saved data related to the Play Store.
  7. Launch the Play Store and verify it has loaded the Japan storefront.
  8. Search for Final Fantasy.
  9. Select Final Fantasy VI.
  10. View more apps by Square Enix.
  11. Scroll down until you find the Final Fantasy Portal App.
  12. Install the portal app.
  13. Run the portal app and choose Final Fantasy from the game list.
  14. Tap the big orange button to install Final Fantasy.
  15. Enjoy the game!

Once the portal app has been installed you can disconnect the VPN. It is no longer needed. The account with the portal app can freely re-download the portal app or the game at any time.

The copy of Final Fantasy that you download via the portal app has multi-language support, so it runs in English on an English language phone. No need to worry about knowing Japanese.
