Hitman GO has been a success for Square Enix on mobile platforms, with the iOS and Android versions of the game selling well enough to warrant a sequel in the form of Lara Croft GO. Still, the announcement of the console version of the game was a surprise when it appeared at PlayStation Experience in December. We snuck an updated look at the PlayStation 4 version of Hitman GO this month, and it's looking better than ever.
Porting to the PS4 and Vita was done with some assistance from Sony (which is why you'll find the game on Sony consoles and the PC, but not on the Xbox One). The original mobile game was developed on an older version of Unity. Taking it to consoles required porting to Unity 5 and moving the controls from touch to physical buttons.
All of the levels are intact, identical to their mobile counterparts, though they appear to be rendered in a higher resolution on the PS4. Seeing Hitman GO running on a TV screen allows you to appreciate the work that went into designing the game board pieces. It's enough to make you wish that a physical version of the Hitman GO board existed. There are no new levels or missions in the console version of the game.
Because the console version of Hitman GO is going to cost more than the mobile version (the Square Enix rep wouldn't commit to a price point but implied that the company was looking to launch in the $10 range), the console version will not feature any IAP (in-app purchases). Items that previously needed to be purchased separately, such as hints, will simply be available as standard game features.
Hitman GO is both cross-buy and cross-save between the PS4 and the Vita, allowing players to pick up right where they left off, as long as the save is synced with the cloud. Also of note is the fact that Hitman GO will be fully compatible with PlayStation TV at launch.
Speaking of which, Square Enix hasn't set an official launch date for the console version of Hitman GO, but I was told that it was launching "in the very near future." So don't be too surprised if it pops up on the PSN store in the next month or two.
The console port of Hitman GO is being treated as something of an experiment by Square Enix. The company has had success with bringing older console titles to mobile. This is doing the same thing in reverse. If Hitman GO sells well, there is no reason why we couldn't see more titles make the jump. However, don't expect to see Lara Croft GO on Sony consoles right away, even if Hitman GO does sell well, as Microsoft still has a window of exclusivity with the Tomb Raider franchise.
