PS5/PS4/XSX/XOne/PC Preview - 'Fallout 76' Skyline Valley DLC

by Adam Pavlacka on June 10, 2024 @ 1:00 a.m. PDT

Fallout 76 is an online prequel where every surviving human is a real person. Work together, or not, to survive. Under the threat of nuclear annihilation, you'll experience the largest, most dynamic world ever created in the legendary Fallout universe.

After the success of the Fallout TV show on Amazon Prime, interest in the franchise is riding high. Fallout 76 saw an influx of players as a result of the show's success, combined with the free copies that were made available to all Prime subscribers. Now, the once-maligned game (it has come a long way since the initial rough launch) is about to release its next major expansion, Skyline Valley.

Announced at the Xbox Game Showcase and available for all players on June 12, 2024, Skyline Valley adds a new playable area to the game map, expanding it southward toward the new Shenandoah region. Be sure to watch out for the aggressive, massive, mutated turkeys while exploring the beautiful countryside near the Grindstone Arch. They've got a mean streak a mile wide. Slumber Mill Motel advertises a place to rest and restore, but is there something else going on? We'll know more in a few days.

As for the greater storyline, the Skyline Valley expansion promises two major mysteries for players to solve:

  • What is causing the massive electrical storm above the area?
  • What is going on inside Vault 63?

For those who just couldn't get enough of Walton Goggins as the Ghoul in the Fallout TV show, Skyline Valley is going to debut a new type of Ghoul, The Lost. Based on the trailer, I'm guessing The Lost are from Vault 63 and are the result of experiments performed there.

But that's not all. Ghoul die-hards have something else to look forward to in early 2025. In the beginning of next year, you will be able to play as a Ghoul in Fallout 76. I've got a feeling that this new character type will be extremely popular, especially if the game is taking the time to build up a detailed storyline around them before players start rolling new (or possibly converting existing?) characters as Ghouls.

One other neat tip from the event: The "fake" phone number advertised in the trailer actually works. You can call 1-844-VAULT-LIFE (1-844-828-5854) to hear a detailed, in-universe sales pitch for Skyline Valley. Press 1 to learn more about Vault 76, press 2 to get help "planning your visit to Skyline Valley," press 3 to find out if you are "eligible for vault life," press 4 to leave a message (you can actually leave a message, but we don't know who is going hear them or what they will be used for).
