About Tony "OUberLord" Mitera

I've been entrenched in the world of game reviews for almost a decade, and I've been playing them for even longer. I'm primarily a PC gamer, though I own and play pretty much all modern platforms. When I'm not shooting up the place in the online arena, I can be found working in the IT field, which has just as many computers but far less shooting. Usually.

PS4/XOne/PC Preview - 'Overpass'

by Tony "OUberLord" Mitera on June 14, 2019 @ 12:30 a.m. PDT

Overpass is an an off-road simulation where the player takes control of powerful buggies and quads, scrabbling across extreme tracks and very hazardous terrain.

I got the opportunity at E3 2019 to sit down and chat with one of the developers behind Overpass, a racing game with an interesting angle.  The game focuses on extreme off-road courses where it is up to the player to find the fastest or most efficient racing line around extreme obstacles.  It's one thing to find such a line on flat tarmac with an easy-to-find apex.  It's another thing entirely when you're in a truck on a practically vertical slope with a boulder that you must first muscle the truck over.

No build was available to me, but the developer spoke at length about what they want to achieve with the game while a lengthy gameplay video loop played beside us.  The game focuses on ATVs, buggies and trucks in single-vehicle races.  Players must simply get from point A to point B as quickly as possible while staying within the cordoned-off route.  At times, the route becomes wide and allows for a range of potential ways that you can proceed.

Some obstacles are little more than deviations in the terrain or small boulders that must be avoided or driven over.  Larger obstacles range from large concrete pipes that must be driven over (or on top of) to large piles of massive tires that represent incredibly uneven and rough terrain to traverse.  To aid you as the driver, you can switch from four-wheel drive to two-wheel drive, or to engage and disengage the differential.  It was also mentioned that you may be able to navigate the course while also minimizing damage to the vehicle.

Upon its release in October of this year, Overpass will feature 40 environments and 25 official vehicles.  It is also touted to have a career mode, including managing a team of engineers and sponsors, but no details were available quite yet.  Finally, the game will also feature multiplayer in the form of seeing ghosts of other people's times, keeping in spirit with the notion of having only one car on the course at a time.  It's tough to know anything more about the game at this point, but with October fast approaching, I suspect we'll know much more about Overpass soon enough.
