10. 'Persona 5' (PS4/PS3)

by Judy on Jan. 31, 2015 @ 12:30 a.m. PST

Persona 5 is a RPG about the internal and external conflicts of a group of troubled high school students - the protagonist and a collection of compatriots he meets in the game's story - who live dual lives as Phantom Thieves.

Dustin Chadwell: I can't imagine making a top 5 RPG list that doesn't include Persona 4. Of course, Persona 5 is high on my list of anticipated games for 2015. Considering it will also be released on current-gen consoles, I'm pretty excited to spend time with it later this year — and by "time," I mean 100-plus hours, but when it comes to Persona, that's not a bad thing.

Chris DeAngelus: A long time coming and utterly shrouded in mystery, Persona 5 is the latest in Atlus's long-running JRPG subfranchise. What little we know about the game involves the themes of enslavement and emancipation. The short preview video confirms it won't deviate much from the franchise's modern roots, with a Tokyo-like city being the central location and a high school student being the protagonist. Unfortunately, that's about all we know, but after the high quality of the previous Persona titles, it's easy to get excited about what Atlus is cooking up.

Brian Dumlao: All of the hype around this title comes from pedigree. The series has always been a source of how to do a JRPG correctly in the modern era, especially with the portable incarnations. Having the power of a console two generations ahead of the developers last effort can make for a mind-blowing Persona title, but even if it's just an uprezzed port of the PS3 title — also the first time a proper Persona appears on that platform — it'll be exciting to see it unveiled.
