Editor's Note: The WP writers are still excited about Metroid Prime 4, but on Friday, Jan. 25, series producer Kensuke Tanabe announced that the game development is being restarted by another studio. We've moved the title to an honorable mention position, since the game won't be released this year.
Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: We don't know much about Prime 4 as of this writing, but the first three games in the Metroid Prime spin-off franchise were exceedingly well receieved, and a sequel has been long anticipated. We can assume that like the others, it will be a first-person action/exploration game, but it will be exciting to see what a decade of advancement has brought to the beloved franchise.
Cody Medellin: Two years since its initial announcement, and we still know nothing about the game. Without a developer, screenshots, or even a teaser trailer that shows anything beyond the logo, it's anyone's guess as to how this will turn out. However, given how well loved the Metroid Prime series is, we can only hope that the eventual reveal and possible 2019 release date will be worth all of that mystery.
Tony "OUberLord" Mitera: Literally as I write this, I'm reading that Metroid Prime 4's development has been effectively restarted with Retro Studios behind the new effort. On the one hand, this means that the same studio who made the previous games of the Prime series are back behind the wheel. On the other hand, it means that we know next to nothing about what the game will end up being, and we're going to need to put a big fat asterisk next to "2019" for this game. It's relatively easy to trust Nintendo's judgment here, but the holding pattern on learning more about this game just became a longer wait.
Fran Soto: Samus Aran is a video game staple. She's our galactic beacon of hope and courage. With Metroid Prime 3 ending in a way that didn't hint at another installment (trying not to be spoilery), it came as a wonderful surprise to longtime fans that Metroid Prime 4 is currently in development. Additionally, with the Nintendo Switch having been out for two years, it was even more surprising that we haven't seen a new Metroid game for the system. It's been a long time coming, as Metroid Prime Federation Force on the 3DS in 2016 wasn't exactly the game fans were wanting. With great patience, we're waiting to see where this mainline Metroid installment takes us.
