When I have a moment to myself and don't have my nose in a book, I like to play action/RPG, adventure and platforming games.

17. 'Days Gone' (PS4)

by Judy on Jan. 27, 2019 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

Days Gone is an open-world action game set in the high-desert of the Pacific Northwest two years after a mysterious global pandemic has decimated the world, killing most but transforming millions into mindless, feral creatures.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: Postapocalyptic zombie games might be common, but execution goes a long way. Days Gone follows drifter Deacon St. John as he struggles to survive in the aftermath of a global pandemic. Reminiscent of games like The Last of Us, it looks to be an atmospheric and intense take on surviving the zombie apocalypse. It might be a well-worn genre, but Days Gone looks to show it still has life in it.

Cody Medellin: This is cautious anticipation. Sony Bend hasn't done a home console game for over a decade now. There have been quite a number of delays on this title, and the zombie genre has cooled off considerably, with only the heavyweights like Resident Evil being able to still pull it off nowadays. Still, this is Sony we're talking about, and after a banner 2018 with its first-party lineup, there's hope that this may be a hidden gem after all.

Fran Soto: After being pushed back and pushed back again, Days Gone finally has a release date for this upcoming spring. The PlayStation exclusive is surely an ambitious game, with a giant open world rivaling Red Dead Redemption II and a postapocalyptic zombie survival narrative. While it may be annoying when games are delayed, it usually means developers are taking time to smooth out the finer details. Because of such ambitious work, Days Gone is promising an immersive challenge to fans of the genre. The recent success of PlayStation exclusives (Detroit Become Human, God of War, Spider-Man, etc.) in the past year gives us hope that Days Gone will live up to its hype.

Thomas Wilde: If this actually comes out, we'll also know that the apocalypse is nigh, which is good, because it'll help prepare us for the ensuing scramble for resources. It's a zombie game, which I can't get enough of, in an open world, which I'm lukewarm about, based in the Pacific Northwest, where I am. I'm willing to give it a chance, and maybe more willing than most, because I'll forgive a game a lot if I end up scrambling for my life against a screaming horde of the undead.
