14. 'Death Stranding' (PS4)

by Judy on Jan. 27, 2019 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

Death Stranding is an open-world action game that follows the story of Sam Porter (Norman Reedus), who must travel across a ravaged wasteland and save humanity from impending annihilation.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: Let's be honest: Death Stranding is the strangest game you'll see this year. The brainchild of Hideo Kojima, it's a strange-looking story following a man traveling through a bizarre postapocalyptic hellscape populated by strange monsters. Yet it's impossible to really describe Death Stranding, as every new trailer adds something new and bizarre to the mix. With the man behind Metal Gear at the helm, it's a game to watch out for, if only to figure out what exactly is going on with the weird baby.

Joe Doyle: I only became interested in the Metal Gear Solid games in recent years, and the story was so weird and compelling that I know Hideo Kojima will bring the same to this new IP. Furthermore, I was awestruck by Silent Hill P.T. and how creepy and entrancing it was. To have Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelson and Guillermo Del Toro on a video game project is just so cool to me, and the world-building is enigmatic and intriguing!

Andreas Salmen: One thing I miss nowadays is the mystery in gaming — the ability of games to actually surprise me and catch me off guard while playing, whether it's a plot twist or unexpected gameplay. Death Stranding is such a game, even though it's still shrouded in mystery. If it weren't for its grand and mind-bending trailers or Hideo Kojima at the helm, I don't even know if it would be as anticipated as it is. There's a lot we don't really know, and I'm certain we'll see more as this year unfolds, but I sincerely hope it will be a great and unexpected journey.

Fran Soto: One thing is certain: Hideo Kojima is wonderfully weird. Father to the Metal Gear franchise and longtime figurehead of Konami, he has since broken away to work on his latest project, Death Stranding. After Silent Hill P.T. dissolved (R.I.P.) due to Konami and Kojima's split, Death Stranding rose from the ashes to become the subject of much curiosity and speculation. After seeing a few different trailers, we still can't say for certain what exactly Death Stranding is about, but its gorgeous design and surreal themes have us interested for sure.
