20. 'Skull & Bones' (PS4/XOne/PC)

by Judy on Jan. 27, 2020 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

In Skull & Bones you will take command of their own warship to live the ultimate pirate experience alongside their friends and become a legend of the open-ocean.

Redmond Carolipio: If anyone's been curious about what a "Master and Commander: Far Side of the World" game would look like if all you had was epic ship battles, this might be the title for you. When I played it a couple of years ago at E3, I was sucked in way more than I thought I would be with its sailing mechanics, looks and general feel of marauding the high seas.

Rhi Mitera: I've been waiting for a game like Skull and Bones for years. My favorite part of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag was the sailing and ship combat, and I was almost disappointed to get back to the plot of the game. I clearly wasn't the only one, either, because that's where Skull and Bones was born. Even better, there's multiplayer this time! It's been delayed a few times, but I'm still hopeful for a 2020 release date, and when that day comes, I'll be there to hoist the colors.

Tony "OUberLord" Mitera: Look, Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag was an amazing pirate game that I would've enjoyed more if it had less of the Assassins Creed bits in it.  Skull & Bones does exactly that by taking the successful naval combat from Black Flag and building a game around it.  The multiplayer sounds very similar to the also-entertaining Sea of Thieves, but Skull & Bones is also set to have a single-player campaign.  I put a lot of time into sinking ships and stealing their cargo in Black Flag, and I'm due for at least a few hundred tons more of ill-gotten goods once Skull & Bones sets sail.

Adam Pavlacka: Pirates. Open waters. Ubisoft. Delays. That about sums up Skull & Bones. The genesis of the game came from the sailing sequences in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, built into a complete adventure. From a technical point of view, the early demos looked fantastic, with ships that had full crews and naval battles that looked like something out of "Pirates of the Caribbean." It also has a much more realistic look than Rare's Sea of Thieves, so the two shouldn't compete. Sea of Thieves can lock down the casual pirate market, while Skull & Bones provides a grittier take.
