8. 'Hollow Knight: Silksong' (Switch/PC)

by Judy on Feb. 15, 2021 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

Discover a vast, haunted kingdom in Hollow Knight: Silksong, the sequel to the award-winning action-adventure. Explore, fight and survive as you ascend to the peak of a land haunted by silk and song.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: Hollow Knight was one of the best indie Metroidvanias to ever come out. Creative, beautiful and utterly packed with content, it set a new high bar for the genre. Silksong is a direct follow-up to that game. Rather than playing as the Knight again, you take on the role of Hornet, the princess of the bug kingdom who wields a needle and thread as a weapon. Hornet's skills allow her to move more quickly and engage in battle in ways that the Knight never could. Add to that an entirely new world to explore full of new creatures, new bosses, and new lore? It's easy to imagine why Silksong could be a strong contender for game of the year.

Cody Medellin: The original Hollow Knight was a tremendously good Metroidvania game in a sea of equally good Metroidvania titles. Like many of the games in this list, it was announced a while back but has been relatively silent on the news front. More details have been recently revealed, so the game release could finally happen this year. Based on how good the original was, there's no doubt this one will also be a winner.

Andreas Salmen: Hollow Knight is possibly one of my favorite games in the past 10 years. From its presentation and atmosphere to its gameplay and level design, it is simply a gorgeously brilliant game. Silksong has enormous shoes to fill, and even if it doesn't quite get there, I'm very much looking forward to the experience. I hope the game can expand its intriguing world and characters even further and deliver some truly memorable boss fights. If so, there's almost nothing that can go wrong.

David Silbert: Since its release in 2017, Hollow Knight has cemented itself as an all-time indie great. With its intricate world, satisfying combat, and mind-bending number of secrets, Hollow Knight quickly captured the hearts of Metroidvania and Souls fans alike. While Australian developer Team Cherry remains mum on the upcoming Silksong, 2021 feels like the perfect time to hear more about Hornet and her new adventure.
