Cossacks Art Of War - Historical Battles and New Missions - Screens

by Rainier on Nov. 28, 2001 @ 3:57 p.m. PST

Four hundred years ago, mainland Europe resounded to the sounds of bloody battles, as nations were created and fell, fortunes made and lost, and new military tactics were developed. Cossacks: The Art of War recreates these battles on an epic scale. Check the included screens for some major carnage.

Featuring more than 35 enhancements to the original, The Art Of War is designed to add a new lease of life to the critically acclaimed game, which went straight to number one when it was first released in March 2001 and been a permanent fixture in the PC top ten ever since (source ChartTrack 2001).

Based on various European Wars of the 16th to 18th Century, the Cossacks: The Art of War features 6 new single-player missions; 6 new historical battles; and 30 new campaign missions. Giving a staggering total of 42 new missions and that’s not even including the multi-player maps yet… Rather than list all of them out, we will just focus on the Historical battles, so those of you who slept through history classes, pay attention, you may learn something this time round.

The Battle of Dunbar
The execution of King Charles I on January 30, 1649, was a dramatic episode in the English Civil War, but it did not mark the end of it. The war entered a new phase lasting from 1650 to 1652. More popularly known as the Third English Civil War, it was essentially a conflict between England and Scotland. Much like ‘Braveheart’ all over again…

The man that would lead the English side was Cromwell and his formidable opponent was none other than his former comrade and veteran soldier, David Leslie. The battle was a triumph for Cromwell, some even regarded it his greatest. However, in the Art of War, it is up to you who you control and what tactics you employ.

The Battle of Marston Moor
Well, rather than fill you in with exact details, ‘The Battle of Marston Moors’ was a huge battle between the Royalist and the Parliament, Rupert versus Cromwell based around the English Civil war. The Royalists had the advantage early on, but the tides turned and Cromwell led the Parliament forces to a concluding victory.

The Battle of Hohenfriedberg
Lets broaden our history knowledge here and delve into a battle that pitted Prussia against Saxony and Austria. I doubt you want to know all the details, other than was it a blood bath? Indeed… head over to the screenshots to view some of the most intense sessions of gaming between two people.

That’s all this week, but as promised a massive blow out of screens from various missions taken in the Campaign and single missions as well. Are included and neatly labelled in the screenshots section. Cossacks: The Art of War is shaping up to blow a cannon ball right through it’s competitors, this is one expansion pack crammed with so many missions and multiplayer maps it will have you playing for many months to come.
