RAGE Joins Special Forces With 'Andy McNab'

by Rainier on Dec. 7, 2001 @ 11:16 a.m. PST

Rage, the UK-based computer games publisher and developer, is pleased to announce that it has signed a worldwide licensing agreement with best selling author and former SAS soldier - Andy McNab - and plans to produce a series of different military-based 3D-action games in conjunction with McNab across a number of leading gaming formats.

McNab is already working closely with Rage's game designers to provide both technical and creative input as well as motion capture to help ensure the highest level of authenticity and realism.

The four-year agreement with McNab is the fourth major international product license that Rage has signed in the past year - the others being with England and Manchester United football star David Beckham, Sylvester Stallone and MGM for the Rocky movie series and world champion aggressive in-line skaters Cesar Mora and Fabiola da Silva.

Andy McNab joined the infantry in 1976 as a boy soldier. In 1984 he was badged as a member of 22 SAS Regiment. He served in B Squadron 22 SAS for nine years and worked on both covert and overt special operations worldwide, including anti-terrorist and anti-drug operations in the Middle and Far East, South and Central America and Northern Ireland.

Trained as a specialist in counter terrorism, prime target elimination, demolitions, weapons and tactics, covert surveillance and information gathering in hostile environments, and VIP protection, McNab worked on cooperative operations with police forces, prison services, anti-drug forces and western backed guerrilla movements as well as on conventional special operations. McNab spent two years working as an undercover operator with 14th Intelligence Group in Northern Ireland and also worked as an instructor on the SAS selection and training team and instructed foreign Special Forces in counter terrorism, hostage rescue and survival training.

In the Gulf War, McNab commanded the famous Bravo Two Zero patrol, an eight man patrol tasked with destroying underground communication links between Baghdad and north-west Iraq and with finding and destroying mobile Scud missile launchers.

McNab has written about his experiences in the SAS in two best-selling books, Bravo Two Zero (1993) and Immediate Action (1995) and his books have sold over 5 million copies worldwide and been published in 17 different countries in 22 languages.

Bravo Two Zero is the highest selling war book of all time and has sold over 1.5 million copies in the UK. Immediate Action, McNab's autobiography, spent 18 weeks at the top of the bestseller lists following the lifting on an ex-parte injunction granted to the Ministry of Defence in September 1995. To date, Immediate Action has sold over 1 million copies in the UK.

McNab is also the author of four best selling thrillers - Remote Control (1997). Crisis Four (1999), Firewall (2000) and Last Light (2001)- each highly acclaimed for their authenticity and all Sunday Times No 1 bestsellers. McNab's fiction draws extensively on his experiences and knowledge of Special Forces soldiering and author Stephen Coontz recently proclaimed McNab to be 'the best suspense thriller writer to put pen to paper since Alistair MacLean'.

McNab was technical weapons adviser and trainer on the hit Michael Mann film Heat (1995) and spent five months in Hollywood working closely with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Val Kilmer. As well as advising on weapons handling and use, McNab was drafted in to work out in detail how master-thief De Niro would go about pulling off robberies on an armoured car and a bank, and how cop Al Pacino would go about tracking him down and stopping him.

McNab is also a director of a Hereford based security company that developed and runs a specialist training course for news crews, journalists and members of non-governmental organisations working in hostile environments (including war zones). The course is currently the only one of its kind in the world.

Paul Finnegan, Managing Director of Rage, commented: "We are absolutely thrilled to be working with Andy McNab and believe that his input and first hand knowledge of the most revered military force in the world will help us deliver a range of gaming titles that redefine the Special Forces genre. We also believe that his high international profile will assist Rage in establishing a major international gaming franchise."

Andy McNab commented: "I've been approached by quite a few games companies over the years, but Rage's work really knocked me out. We share the same attention to detail and commitment to absolute authenticity. I am really looking forward to working together with them on this project."
