The Mummy Returns rises on PlayStation 2… The Mummy Returns, the official video game of the blockbuster movie, will be released for PlayStation 2 in November, through Vivendi Universal Interactive.

Closely following the plot of the summer blockbuster, The Mummy Returns is a 3D action/exploration title where the player can opt to fight for the forces of good or evil. Effectively two games in one, players can choose to control either movie hero Rick O'Conner or the returning villain Imhotep. Thus, two very different game styles are offered as players are given different objectives for each character.

As Rick, players must rescue his son Alex and wife Evy from the clutches of Imhotep, before attempting to defeat the powerful Scorpion King and thus saving the world. To this end, O'Conner is armed with a variety of weapons, with more available as the game progresses. Imhotep, however, can use an array of spells to attack Rick, but must also gather the ingredients needed to resurrect the Scorpion King so that the dark sorcerer can use his inhuman armies to take over the world.

In keeping with the globe-trotting elements of the movie, The Mummy Returns features levels based in London, Cairo and the Hamunaptara ruins, while the supporting cast includes the undead and pygmy zombies. Similarly, The Mummy Returns also boasts incredible camera work to convey the feel of a blockbuster film, with the action tracked by a series of dynamic viewpoints.

One of the most compelling aspects of the game is players have the choice of either playing as the hero or the villain. Once players choose their path, they take control of either Rick O’Connell or Imhotep. When a player picks Rick’s path, his goal is to rescue Alex, resuscitate Evy, defeat The Scorpion King and eventually save the world. His enemies include Imhotep, his living and undead allies, pygmy mummies and The Scorpion King.

If the player picks Imhotep’s path, his goal is to use Imhotep’s magic and all the means available to raise up The Scorpion King, so he can take his army and rule the world. Imhotep’s enemies are Rick, Ardeth Bey and his Medjai, pygmy mummies and The Scorpion King. To fight his enemies Imhotep employs magic spells and hand-held weapons.

The story line of The Mummy Returns for the game follows the plot of its theatrical counterpart. The Mummy Returns is set in 1933, nearly a decade after the events of the first film. Rick O’Connell (Fraser) is now married to Evelyn (Weisz), and the couple has settled in London, where they are raising their eight-year-old son Alex (played by screen newcomer Freddie Boath). When a chain of events finds the corpse of Imhotep (Vosloo) resurrected in the British Museum, the mummy Imhotep walks the earth once more, determined to fulfill his quest for immortality. But another force has also been set loose in the world…one born of the darkest rituals of ancient Egyptian mysticism, and even more powerful than Imhotep. When these two forces clash, the fate of the world will hang in the balance, sending the O’Connells on a desperate race to save the world from unspeakable evil, and rescue their son before it is too late.

In Universal Pictures’ The Mummy Returns, writer/director Stephen Sommers was reunited with stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Oded Fehr and Patricia Velasquez for a sequel to their 1999 worldwide box office smash, The Mummy. They are joined by WWF sensation The Rock and newcomer Freddie Boath in a brand new action-adventure thrill-ride with spectacular visual effects by Industrial Light & Magic.
