by Rainier on Nov. 16, 2002 @ 11:11 p.m. PST

Platoon covers the period from the early days of the conflict (late 1965) to the height of battle in 1968. and recreates some of the most tragic moments of the Vietnam war : Operation “Shiny Bayonet”, the Pleiku Campaign, Operation “Pershing” ... Combat and weapons are ultra realistic, real-life tactics making use of real US Army reports and documents. Check out 28 new screens ...

You are Martin Lionsdale, newly wed and new recruit of the US Army. As the story and events unfold, you will come to know his emotions, his relationship with his wife, and the War itself. You will also come to know several other key members of the platoon. As you successfully carry out your missions, you will climb the ranks to become a Lieutenant and be responsible for a full platoon of infantry (up to 30 men) composed of specialist soldiers: (rifleman, sniper, scout, machine gunner, grenadier, engineer, commando...).

Platoon’s game engine features tremendous visual effects: vertex shaders for character movement and grass effects, particle systems for explosion effects (smoke, fire), dynamic shadows for moving objects, environment mapping for reflective surfaces (windows, water and shiny metal) and a scalable level of detail system (L.O.D).

  • Realistic Vietnam War combat including an in-depth tutorial to learn US troop tactics.
  • Dynamic weather effects and night missions (Wind, Fog, Rain, Monsoons...).
  • 3D terrains modelled on Vietnamese countryside (elephant grass, rice paddy, jungle, marsh, bunkers...).
  • Soldier abilities affected according to the environment, situation and terrain.
  • Level of experience determines a soldiers rank in the field and Leaders gain new abilities with each promotion.
  • Vehicle Control! (Armoured Personnel Carrier M113, Tank M48 Patton).
  • Realistic soldier movement (motion capture) (400 different animations)
  • Controllable static supporting units (mortar, recoilless rifle)
  • Music score from BAFTA award winning muscian Tamás KREINER
