MMORPGs and MONEY! Who could ask for more?

by Thomas on April 14, 2002 @ 6:52 p.m. PDT

Thanks to Jed "Old School" for sending us this article.. The connection between on-line games and legitimate means to earn fame, glory and/or riches (to varying degrees) is well underway. The difference between games of chance and the above examples is the degree of skill involved (and acknowledged) with winning. Will money and MMORPGs combine for a joyous marriage or volatile mix? The following article starts out at some tournament styled title Enroth-Online, then goes on to talk about some other money avenues that are opening up, including one in Asia. Enjoy the read below!

The first of a three-part Enroth-Online release courtesy of Dreamryder.

Well a week has past here at Grand Puba Gaming since we went live with Enroth-Online and as promised here is our take on the future.

The ability to make money from an online game is the next evolutionary step for the MMORPG industry. Tournament play is the most financially viable way that allows players to earn money playing games. The only problem with tournaments is that holding cash tournaments the size of todays and tomorrows MMORPG's player base is logisically impossible (try and host even a small one hundred thousand competitor tournament and see what I mean), until now...

We have developed Multi-Tiered Tournament Method (patent pending). Which is the world's first tournament method designed to handle up to millions of competitors, great for todays Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMORPG's). This will allow up to millions of gamers to compete for literally millions of dollars in prize money. Every gamer is interested in finding a way to earn real money by playing video games, its the stuff of dreams. Multi-Tiered Tournaments make that dream a reality.

While this a unique offering in relation the MMORPG genre, there is an existing precedence for other on-line game types. Readers who read " In Search of Ironsquad " may recall the affiliate of En-Tranz (Asia-Pac Shadowbane publisher) World Game Federation, offering ladders, publicity and cash prizes for top competitor in on-line FPS and Strategy-Sims. From the En-Tranz affiliate page:

WGF hosts regular events including tournaments with fabulous prizes help to nurture "top" players able to compete at the international level. WGF also develops infrastructure to promote players and games through other media such as magazines, television, and radio.

FPS tournaments are also offered through Condition Zero for a considerable kitty.

Condition Zero will include the latest version of the number-one online action game, Counter-Strike, which will be updated to include some of the weapons, characters, scenarios and technology developed for Condition Zero. Total cash prizes for the tournament will be $100,000. Complete tournament rules will be released March 15, 2002. For more information on Condition Zero visit www.cs-conditionzero.com

Moving away from the elite cyber-athlete image, game services focused on mass appeal are also entertaining cash prizes and giveaways.
