Building further on an already successful partnership, Atari, Inc. and FUNimation have entered into an agreement, through which Atari will publish video games for certain next-generation consoles based on FUNimation’s popular animated television series, Yu Yu Hakusho. Already an acknowledged blockbuster in Japan where the manga alone has sold more than 40 million copies, Yu Yu Hakusho made its debut in the United States in April 2002 on Cartoon Network, where it is currently among the top-rated shows on the network’s “Toonami Block” of programming. “FUNimation is more than a cherished partner,” said Bruno Bonnell, Chairman and CEO of Atari, Inc. “FUNimation is a valued collaborator, and we are pleased to expand our relationship to include such a high-profile property as Yu Yu Hakusho. As evidenced by our mutual success with the Dragon Ball Z® franchise, we feel our partnership with FUNimation maximizes the strengths of both companies and opens up additional areas of opportunity for each.”

“We are delighted to bring the Yu Yu Hakusho property to the interactive entertainment audience, and Atari has proven to be the ideal partner through which to do so,” said Gen Fukunaga, president of FUNimation. “Atari has authentically captured the essence of Dragon Ball Z® in its interactive portfolio, and I know that Yu Yu Hakusho fans and anime lovers everywhere will enjoy the same results because of Atari’s commitment to quality.”

Acknowledged as one of the most popular anime series of all time by Brutus, Japan’s leading anime magazine, Yu Yu Hakusho tells the story of fourteen-year-old Yusuke Urameshi, a young rebel frustrated by lack of direction in life. But when he unexpectedly sacrifices his own life to save a child from a deadly traffic accident, everything changes. Because of his noble sacrifice, Yusuke is given a second chance and is allowed to return to Earth – but not to the life he left behind. Yusuke has been granted some amazing new powers, and if he wants to live again, he must use them for the cause of good.
