German fan site NFS-Planet has a transcript of a community chat with EA Assistant Producer Scott Nielsen in where he confirms the next NFS title will be NFS Underground 2. During the chat he revealed several details on what to expect in the sequel such as : possibility for replay and observer/spectator mode, better online/cheat security, most likely no track editor, larger amount of online slots (NFS:U only had 4), better and more realistic physics, an expanded car list, option to turn off collisions, overhaul of the chat system/interface, better damage model. More info and the first screens are expected to be released at E3.
