PS2 First Impression - 'Castlevania: Curse of Darkness'

by Thomas Wilde on Feb. 1, 2005 @ 2:24 a.m. PST

Curse of Darkness introduces players to an entirely new storyline and main character – Hector, one of two Devil Forgemasters, who had once refined his skills under Dracula. Told in true Castlevania style, this action-packed tale of betrayal and revenge takes players on a journey through an expansive world filled with formidable foes and beautifully rendered environments to the ruins of Dracula’s castle.

Koji Igarashi, the series's director, was on hand to answer questions and speak about the game, which is set three years after the events of the NES classic, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.

The protagonist, Hector, is a Devil Forgemaster trained by Dracula. He's capable of creating what Igarashi calls Innocent Devils: monsters that follow his commands. (I guess that infinite swarm of Medusa Heads had to come from somewhere, right?) When Trevor Belmont and his friends attacked Castlevania, Hector had already left Dracula's service.

Three years later, Hector's trying to lead an ordinary life with his beloved. When he's attacked and betrayed by his former colleague Isaac, another Forgemaster, Hector's beloved is killed. To get his revenge on Isaac, Hector's forced to return to the cursed country of Vallachia, where Dracula's curse has warped the land itself.

Curse of Darkness wasn't playable at the show, but Konami's hoping to have a demo running for E3. They did show a trailer, however, featuring some of Hector's powers and the combat system. Curse is a 3D action game, similar to Lament of Innocence, but Hector has more powers and abilities than Leon Belmont did. Among other things, you can wield weapons such as a sword, a spear, and a giant squeaky hammer. Hector can also forge Innocent Devils to overcome obstacles or fight on his side; for instance, he can create a bird to carry him across a canyon, or produce a suit of animated armor to lift a heavy gate.
