Blockbuster Will Start Renting Out PSP Titles

by Rainier on May 11, 2005 @ 2:40 a.m. PDT

As Sony's PSP becomes more mainstream and owners look for more gaming action, Blockbuster announces today that it will carry PSP for rent in all stores. More than 4,400 company-owned stores nationwide will carry the games by May 17 and the selection will continue to increase as new titles launch throughout the year.

This expanded collection of Blockbuster game rental offerings brings all the PSP excitement to the masses, giving more game fans the chance to play more games. In addition, gamers will be able to purchase used PSP games at Blockbuster, and, at trading stores, gamers can trade-in older games for valuable store credit. This move comes on the heels of the successful launch of the PSP in Blockbuster's store-in-store retail outlet, Game Rush@Blockbuster.

PSP games that will be available at launch for rent at Blockbuster stores across the country include Sony's "Twisted Metal: Head-On," "Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade," and EA's "Need for Speed Underground Rivals." All games are available for the standard game rental fee of $6.99, which gives gamers seven days of non-stop play. And, if gamers need an extra day or two, Blockbuster no longer charges late fees.

"Adding PSP games to our rental mix is consistent with our mission to give more people more ways to play more great games," said Glenn Broderick, director of game rental marketing for Blockbuster.

PSP successfully launched in more than 450 Game Rush stores in March with PSP hardware, retail and rental games, and accessories, including the AKAI iSound speakers that can be found exclusively at Game Rush. In April, Game Rush stores began selling PSP-compatible Universal Media Disc (UMD) movies.

"We accelerated the launch of PSP games into our national Blockbuster stores after seeing a phenomenal success in our Game Rush stores," said Broderick. "With an estimated 65 percent of the U.S. population within a 10 minute drive of a Blockbuster store, the majority of PSP owners can now rent their favorite games from us."

For PSP gamers who want to indulge their passion and Game Their Way, Blockbuster makes it even more affordable with the Game Pass, offering the convenience of unlimited rentals one game out at a time for $19.99 a month. Until the May 16, the Game Pass is available $14.99 for the first month.
