'Tetris DS' (NDS) - 6 New Screens

by Rainier on Feb. 23, 2006 @ 9:41 a.m. PST

The long blue bar. The yellow block. And those darn zigzag things whose images stay on your brain. These familiar Tetris shapes started a generation of video game fans. Now Nintendo is putting a new spin on the classic with Tetris DS.

Hard-core and casual gamers alike became obsessed with the original. Tetris DS builds on that emotional attachment by combining the original game with new types of game play that could only be possible on Nintendo DS.

Each of the six modes of play features a theme based on a classic Nintendo game, such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda or Metroid. The traditional Tetriminos (falling blocks) and line-clearing strategy remain the staples of the game, but the touch screen adds a new element of interactivity.

Some modes give players special Tetris puzzles to solve. Others feature head-to-head action between two players, or massive wireless battles between 10 DS users, even if only one player has a game card. Players also can log onto Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to compete in two- or four-player battles. Tetris DS even includes a point-based rating system based on players' battle results. Opponents can see one another's ratings, which indicate their skill levels.

This unique take on Tetris really shows off the touch-screen capability of Nintendo DS. Players use a stylus to drag and move Tetriminos in a giant stack to make them fall into horizontal lines. In early levels, they can tap Tetriminos to spin them just the way they need them. Players have as much time as they need to carefully plan their moves, so it plays very differently from the other frantic modes.

Features :

  • Every gamer, whether competitive or casual, will find a way to reconnect with one of the most popular puzzle games in history.
  • Every mode in Tetris DS features a theme based on a famous Nintendo character. Players race to complete missions before Link loses all his hearts or fuse Tetriminos (falling blocks) to detonate a Tetris core with Samus. Other modes feature Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Balloon Fighter.
  • Up to 10 players can clash using DS Download Play to form a Tetris DS match of massive proportions, all with just one game card. Compete in Push, Standard and Mission modes to discover who is the true multiplayer master.
  • There are tons of ways to play: Players whip out their styluses and clear a towering pile of Tetriminos in Touch mode, or clear line after line to pummel opponents in Push mode.
  • Using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, up to four players can compete in wireless two- or four-player battles against friends or strangers, near or far.

The game has six game modes to choose from:

  • Touch: This unique take on Tetris really shows off the touch-screen capability of Nintendo DS. Players use a stylus to drag and move Tetriminos in a giant stack to make them fall into horizontal lines. In early levels, they can tap Tetriminos to spin them just the way they need them. Players have as much time as they need to carefully plan their moves, so it plays very differently from the other frantic modes.
  • Standard: This Mario-themed mode features the same addictive game play that made the original Tetris so wildly popular. Players guide falling Tetriminos and form horizontal lines to clear them away. Mario runs around Super Mario Bros. levels in the background.
  • Catch: In this Metroid-themed mode, players guide a flying block through Metroid-infested levels and seek out falling Tetriminos. Players can spin and maneuver their block to catch falling Tetriminos and create a 4x4 square. Once they do that, the block will explode in all directions and earn points.
  • Puzzle: Players solve tricky Tetris puzzles at their own pace using just the Tetriminos provided. Players tap the orientation they want to use and then the Tetrimino will automatically fall into place. There are more than 50 puzzles for players to complete in all.
  • Push: The goal of this mode is to clear two lines at a time to move the screen down and push opponents into the red zone. Players just can't let their own blocks build up too high, or it's game over. Players also can play this mode with another player using DS Download Play.
  • Mission: In this Legend of Zelda®-themed mode, players have to complete the missions that appear on the top screen before time runs out. If they don't complete it before time runs out, a heap of new blocks will appear on their screen. If they let blocks stack up to the top of the screen, the game is over.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection allows up to four friends or strangers to compete against one another in two different modes. A rating system tracks players' battle results and displays the information for opponents. Players can be matched based on their skill levels.

Push mode features two-player battles against friends or strangers.

Standard mode includes items for players to use to foil their opponents. When competing against friends, players can engage in two- or four-player battles with or without use of items. When competing against strangers, players can engage in two-player battles without items or four-player battles with items.
