59th Annual Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the winners of its 59th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards, which took place for the second time at the annual Award show was held at 2008 International CES, Las Vegas.

The Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards honor achievements in two areas: Science, Engineering & Technology for Broadcast Television, which includes broadcast, cable and satellite distribution, and secondly, Science, Engineering and Technology for Broadband and Personal Television, encompassing interactive television, gaming technology, as well as the Internet, cell phones, private networks, and personal media players.

Industry giants gathered to celebrate awards given to their company's in honor of achievements in video game development. Awards were given out as follows:

Following are the winners for Engineering & Technology for Creation and Implementation of Video Games and Platforms.

The Awards for Game Controller Innovation:

  • Nintendo DS (Nintendo)
  • Nintendo Wii (Nintendo)

The Awards for Handheld Game Device Display Screen Innovation:

  • Football & Auto Race (Mattel)
  • Atari Lynx (Atari)
  • Nintendo DS (Nintendo)

The Awards for User Generated Content - Game Modification:

  • Pinball Construction (Electronic Arts)
  • Quake (id Software)
  • Second Life (Linden Lab)

The Awards for Physics Engines:

  • Havok

The Awards for Development of Massively Multiplayer Online Graphical Role Playing Games:

  • Neverwinter Nights (AOL-Time Warner/Stormfront/Ubisoft/TSR-Wizards of the Coast)
  • Everquest (Sony Online Entertainment)
  • World of Warcraft (Blizzard Entertainment)

The Awards for Visual Digital Content Creation Tools and their Impact:

  • Autodesk Maya (Autodesk)
  • Autodesk 3ds Max (Autodesk )
   

For the second year in a row, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has honored Nintendo with an Emmy Award for excellence in engineering creativity. The Wii system was recognized for its innovative motion-sensing controls, which have attracted a broad range of nontraditional gamers and veteran players alike. The award also recognized Nintendo DS for its touch-screen control scheme and distinctive dual-screen display.

“The pioneering interfaces for Wii and Nintendo DS reflect our long tradition of seeking new ways to enhance the gaming experience for users at every level,” said Don James, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of operations. “We’re grateful for this award and thank the academy for honoring us a second time.”

Nintendo previously received an Emmy in 2007 for its invention of the plus- shaped D-pad, which radically changed how people interact with their video games and, by extension, their televisions.
