MMOs Expected to Make $1.5 Billion in Subscription Revenue This Year

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, Massively Multiplayer Online Games, such as World of Warcraft which will boost , will generate $1.5 billion in subscription revenues worldwide in 2008 and grow to more than $2.5 billion by 2012.
Martin Olausson, Director of Digital Media Research at Strategy Analytics, said “We are seeing continued strong growth for the MMOG segment this year. The highly anticipated release of ‘World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King’ will help propel the market to new heights in the remainder of this year and throughout the coming year.”
David Mercer, Vice President and Principal Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said “With $1.5 billion in online subscription revenue alone this year – on top of the retail revenues that the game software itself generates – the MMOG format has quickly become one of the most important game segments for the industry.”
Electronic sell-through of games expected to grow show a 23% compound annual growth rate in the next 4 years, while total online games software and services are projected to reach $12 billion globally by 2012.
