  • 37 unique castles based on historical Japanese castle layouts add realism to fortifications.
  • 12 Historical Army Formations are based on Japanese history. You can evolve your army formation in response to the current battle situation in real time.
  • Weather effects like fog, rain, and snow influence the outcome of the battle. Heavy fog can create a “fog of war” effect in battle mode, so that an army would have little or no intelligence about the enemy army’s numbers, strength, and position.
  • Choose the attack time: attacking at dawn increases the chance of fog, which can be used to cover up your charging cavalry. Natural lighting changes corresponding to the time of day .
  • Soldiers act human. Fear, fatigue, and morale affect their battle performance.
  • Chain of Command effect means the leader influences the performance of his subordinates.
  • Battle replay allows the player to review battle success or failure.
  • Multiplayer option lets the player to compete against a friend.

Outside of Battle

  • Historical characters from 16th century Japan each have biographical descriptions and individually-drawn portraits from Taiwanese artists. Qualities like age, leadership, and intelligence are based on the historical character and are available as statistics. These statistics improve with battle experience and/or other modifiers, and also affect the gameplay. There are over 600 historical characters in the game with 240 unique portraits.
  • Ninjas can be used to assassinate leaders, spy on foreign clans, sabotage castles, and trick enemy armies. There are also four additional special ninjas that have unique abilities: Corruptor, Bodyguard, Elite Assassin, and Master Teacher. The player may choose only one of these special ninjas per game, which means the player can replay the game with a different choice to see its effect on the game outcome.
  • Social Ranking is the class system in feudal Japan that bestowed privileges on and power to individuals of a higher rank. The title of Shogun means that the character receives the maximum popularity, leadership, governing, and division size bonuses.
  • Special events give the player opportunities to change their fate. Appeasing beggar peasants increases the Daimyo’s popularity, and horse and rifle merchants allow the player to increase their cavalry and riflemen reserves.
  • Diplomacy needs to be used in addition to battle successes to carry out the campaign. The player can make or break alliances, make or break treaties, or declare war on other clans. The friendliness between two clans is influenced by their relationship with other clans, so that “the friend of my enemy is my enemy”. Each change in relationship between two clans can cause a chain reaction across all clans and drastically change the overall situation.
  • Marriages can be used to improve the friendship between two clans.
  • Resource management can be improved upon to increase production rates for a castle. Production rates can be increased by assigning a competent governor to the castle, or by developing farms, markets, and other facilities. Some castles at certain geographical locations can develop special facilities, such as rifle houses or river banks.
  • Special items can be equipped by historical characters for additional stat bonuses.
