GarageGames Revived, Torque Engine Making Comeback

by Rainier on Jan. 20, 2011 @ 1:44 p.m. PST

Newly-formed GarageGames announced that it has acquired the assets relating to the Torque software division of InstantAction,  and will be relaunching the Torque business under the GarageGames banner.

The resurrection of the GarageGames brand highlights the new Company’s focus on the independent game developer community. To celebrate the relaunch and return to its “indie” roots, GarageGames has reduced pricing across all its Torque on-line products to $99 each for a limited time.

“The Torque community and our internal team expressed a desire for a return to our original mission – providing affordable tools for independent game developers and game education communities,” said Eric Preisz, CEO of GarageGames. “As Torque enthusiasts themselves, our new parent company shares this vision. Their support, as well as a return to a singular focus on our line of Torque engine products, puts us in a great position to expand, hire great talent and better meet the needs of our community.”

GarageGames' Torque products provide developers, regardless of size or experience level, an affordable way to create high quality games. The Torque line of products includes 2D and 3D solutions for the PC/Macintosh, iOS, Xbox 360 and Wii. Torque solutions offer features such as robust editing, advanced rendering, a streamlined art pipeline, Web publishing, award-winning multiplayer networking, and several state-of-the-art add-on tools.

With a combined 30 years of game development and Torque experience, Preisz and GarageGames COO Dexter Chow understand the challenges that face independent and aspiring developers.

"Relaunching GarageGames provides us with a unique opportunity to redouble our efforts into art, execution and customer service," said Chow. "The team is committed to bringing a new level of quality to Torque which will make the product easier to use, more stable and intuitive. We’re energized by our new direction and hope to attract top level, like-minded talent that can help us realize our goals.”

The Torque community boasts more than 160,000 members of the development, small business and game education communities; and plays an integral part in the refinement and evolution of the Torque technologies. Additionally, Torque technology is an industry standard offered in more than 200 universities and schools for computer science and game design curricula.

“Ten years ago, GarageGames literally created the game engine market for independent game developers – that’s a fantastic heritage to inherit as new owners,” said Erik Graham of Graham Software. “Our new pricing should demonstrate to the Torque community that we intend to honor that heritage. After a decade, GarageGames is still the only provider of a full-source-code solution at a price indies and enthusiasts can afford. We have great hopes for GarageGames and are confident that Eric, Dexter and their whole team can take the Company to new heights with the right resources, attention and focus.”
