Battlestar Galactica Online is the first game inspired by a blockbuster Hollywood franchise to be fully developed on Unity technology for MMOG audiences. This platform independent engine makes it possible to produce real-time 3D applications such as MMO games with exceptionally high quality graphics without having to download a client.
Players will be able to choose to play as cylons or humans in a constant struggle to control the universe or just survive its perils. A blend of tactical space combat, exploration, and mission-based gameplay will provide a diverse experience. The dramatic missions will define the game's overall storyline, enabling the player to delve into mysteries of the Battlestar universe. Battlestar Galactica Online will create a new standard for web games, with beautiful 3d graphics and innovative game mechanics bringing a new level of game play to browser based MMOG. Assets from the television production will be integrated into the game to deliver an even more authentic experience.
“There is always a risk when you translate a well-known IP into another medium,” said Heiko Hubertz, CEO and founder, Bigpoint. “We built what we believed was a recipe for success; a fantastic gaming experience inspired by an iconic show, with the added benefit of being a free-to-play title. We are grateful to the fans for their support and interest in this game, and pledge to continue to improve and optimize the game.”
Through 2011, Bigpoint expects the number of players in Battlestar Galactica Online to continue to grow as it ramps up its international marketing and partner activities. Unlike most online game companies, Bigpoint leverages a vast, global network of over 1000 distribution partners who publish games on their portals. Moreover, Bigpoint localizes its games into 25+ languages and incorporates over 150 payment solutions, which helps it attract players more than 250,000 new players every day.
Effective April 6, 2011, Battlestar Galactica Online was upgraded to the latest release of the award-winning Unity game platform, Unity 3.3. This upgrade improves overall stability and enhances special effects and graphics. For example, all ships now feature crisper textures and reflection-based shaders that deliver high levels of detail.
In addition, Bigpoint continues to add new content, features, and polish to the game based on its development schedule and community feedback. In Battlestar Galactica Online, players can now experience several new human and Cylon ships in addition to the series' classic fighters: the Viper Mark VII, and the Cylon Raider. Additionally, new Cylon Tier 2 and Tier 3 ships have been added. Players can spend Tylium to acquire new ships, a valuable resource that can be mined, looted from defeated AI-controlled enemies, or purchased with Cubits – the game’s premium currency.
