'Split/Second' (ALL) Developer Shut Down By Disney

by Rainier on July 1, 2011 @ 9:05 a.m. PDT

Split/Second, known in Europe as Split/Second: Velocity, is an intense action racing game set within the world of a hyper-competitive reality television show. Competitors vie to be the first across the finish line in a made-for-TV city built for destruction, with the ultimate goal of becoming the season champion.

With people already being let go earlier this year, Disney has now shut down the Brighton-based racing games developer and issued the following statement:

Disney Interactive Studios confirms that Black Rock Studios' current project has not been greenlit for further development, consequently the company informed employees yesterday of the intent to enter a consultation process on the proposal to close the studios.

Disney Interactive acquired Black Rock Studios in 2008, then called Climax Racing, and after the demise two new development outlets have already been sighted ShortRound Games, and Roundcube Entertainment.

Competitors in Split/Second don’t just collide with other vehicles to knock them from the track - they can also trigger explosive events that drastically alter the dynamics of the race. Players must use strategy and pinpoint timing to derail opponents, tactically alter the track or create entirely new routes.
