Hearing about Xbox Live bans isn't unusual. Microsoft goes to great lengths to ensure that its online service is free from cheaters and hackers, so that paying customers can have an uninterrupted experience. When unauthorized activity is detected bans are swift and not subject to appeal.
Given the hard line, it was highly unusual to see yesterday's announcement on Major Nelson's blog that a small number of bans were being reversed by the company.
According to Stephen "Stepto" Toulouse, head of the Policy and Enforcement team for Xbox Live, a software tool used by the company incorrectly flagged a small number of consoles as modified systems between August 29th and September 9th of this year. The consoles in question were not modified.
The team has since unbanned the consoles in question and ceased using the tool that caused the error. Users who were affected have been contacted via email with an apology as well as three free months of Xbox Live Gold and 1600 MS points to spend.
