Boomlagoon was co-founded in April 2012 by Angry Birds developer trio Antti Stén, Tuomas Erikoinen and Ilkka Halila.
Stén brings extensive experience growing game startups with his long career at Digital Chocolate and Rovio, including most recently building Rovio’s cloud architecture from scratch. Erikoinen is the man behind the Angry Birds visuals and was one of the original developers of the now massive franchise. Ilkka Halila was the lead programmer at Rovio, following a long career in the indie and open source community, until joining Boomlagoon.
With over 20 years of game development and startup experience together, Boomlagoon’s first title is expected to launch soon.
Investor Jari Ovaskainen and LVP’s David Gardner join the Boomlagoon board. Ovaskainen previously founded Iobox and sold it Telefonica for €215m. David Gardner, General Partner at LVP, is the former CEO of Atari, and EVP & COO of Electronic Arts worldwide. Both LVP and Jari are also Investors in the Finnish videogames phenomenon, Supercell.
Commenting on the funding, Jari Ovaskainen said: “Boomlagoon has the skills, knowledge and industry experience required to develop world class games. They are on track for building a massive business franchise with a compelling pipeline of upcoming titles.”
LVP’s David Gardner added: “The Boomlagoon guys have a sense of style and an effortless understanding of what is fun in a game. When I first met with the team in Finland I knew they were onto something great, and immediately wanted to help them realise their creative dreams.”
