'Armada Online' Still In Development, Seeks Crowd Funding - Screens

by Rainier on Aug. 27, 2012 @ 2:55 a.m. PDT

Armada Online is a multiplayer action RPG, where you explore a universe that is dense with life and color. You command a single starship and get involved in large-scale battles against hordes of biomechanical aliens.

As you warp to different regions, you will engage in new challenges, such as summoning stations to defend against incoming waves, or fight in pvp arenas, or hunt elite aliens across star systems.  Gain levels to allocate skill points, learn special skills, and customize your ship to take on more difficult challenges.  An interesting thing about our game is that we started by making what is typically considered “the end game” and made it rewarding for players of different skill levels, so even in its present state, it is highly replayable and welcomes spontaneous/mixed groups with different play styles.

Armada Online is currently in alpha, fans interested in trying out the game can download it right here.

Armada Online is a 100% server-based game similar to a synched RTS structure, which prevents cheating, but also makes it so that everyone sees the same thing, making online play “actual” instead of “approximated”.  A position change of a few pixels can have a huge impact on the outcome of a battle.

Developers Roger Fang and Mark Jordan have launched a kickstarter campaign to fund the project, and while the initial goal is $180,000, it becomes a whole lot more interesting at $500k (the devs will release the original Armada (Dreamcast) into the public domain, and rewrite Armada 1 for PC as a free release (using art/animation/ships from AO), as well as trying to release it for free on other platforms later, with 4 player coop support on one system). When the funding reaches $1,000,000 an editor will be added to make your own battle maps, a local mode so you can play battle maps solo offline or over lan.
