Read Only Memories has been advocated across the board by the adventure game, indie, and LGBTQ communities. The game’s primary storyline is a futuristic, dystopian commentary on today’s social issues with a particular focus on queer characters.

Read Only Memories, is now within $10,000 of its Kickstarter funding goal with under a week to go in the crowdfunding campaign.

You're a young journalist trying to hack it on your own in Neo-San Francisco. It’s a tough city, but you’re a tough nut. One day you receive a package containing a beta version of the latest ROM, an intelligent device that has replaced all personal mobile technology. With the ROM lay a mysterious note from a close friend, saying that he had to leave the country immediately. Weird.

In 2064, ROMs are as common as smartphones in 2014, but you've resisted getting one up to this point. You don’t need fancy technology, and you don’t care if you're old fashioned like that. But now that you have one, your life dramatically changes.

Your friend worked for Parallax, which is the leader in customer-side ROMs since 2045 and a company that you’ve been curious about for some time now.

As you progress through the story, you'll discover and solve dark mysteries surrounding your ROM and the L.I.P.S. OS it runs on, as well as one of the top producers of the machines, Parallax.

And remember, you will meet many different kinds of people during your journey through the feral San Francisco that has come to exist in 2064. It is up to you to decide who to trust, who to work with and who to challenge in this harrowing journey through Neo-SF.

Read Only Memories scored a ringing endorsement from a leading cast member from Snatcher, Hideo Kojima’s 1994 retro-adventure game from which ROM draws inspiration. Jeff Lupetin, English voice actor for the character “Gillian Seed”, voiced his support for the Kickstarter campaign and hinted at ROM’s plot, saying that his character had moved from Neo-Kobe to Neo-SF in the “hopes of a calmer life for me… and my ROM Metal Gear MK-II”.

The technology behind Read Only Memories is exciting and unique; one of the custom tools being made for the game is a Twine to Unity converter, which will allow for typescript changes to be made without messing with the code. This enables story writers with no prior programming knowledge to effortlessly plug text directly into a developing game without the aid of engineers, enabling leaner teams and faster development. The ROM team plans to eventually publish this tool in the Unity Store.

“The immense support that this title has received from fans of adventure games is overwhelming.” declares Matt Conn, Producer of Read Only Memories. “I was really excited by how open-minded the community was in embracing a game featuring queer content. This also goes to validate our belief that diverse and complex characters lead to a more compelling story.”
