'SimCity' Sells 1.1 Million, Offers Free Game For Connectivity Issues

by Rainier on March 18, 2013 @ 11:17 a.m. PDT

SimCity is a true rebirth of the franchise that brings the depth of simulation that has been the series hallmark for more than two decades and marries it with next generation accessibility and a robust multiplayer mode, giving players the power to change a world together.

SimCity engages a new generation of PC gamers as they take charge of their own customized cities and build a world that co-exists alongside friends. For the first time in SimCity franchise history, players' decisions have long-lasting repercussions that extend beyond their city limits. Together, players address real global challenges such as climate change, the search for renewable resources and natural disasters.  It's up to the players to decide whether to compete or collaborate to shape the world of tomorrow – for better or for worse.

"SimCity had a great weekend with sales strong across both North America and Europe, adding to overwhelming demand at launch that has us tracking well beyond expectations for the game," said Peter Moore, Chief Operating Officer for EA. "SimCity is one of the storied brands in gaming, and Maxis delivered a game re-envisioned and engineered for the online age."

Gamers have logged on to SimCity via Origin in record numbers, with 44 percent of SimCity sales delivered via EA's direct-to-consumer digital download service. SimCity gamers have also helped set new records for peak concurrent users on Origin, now at 1.3 million and rising.

In just two weeks:

  • SimCity players have logged more than 15 million hours of online gameplay.
  • More than 5.7 million original cities have been created since launch.
  • More than 780 million buildings have been built.
  • SimCity mayors to date have built enough road and railroad tracks to circle the globe more than 40,000 times.

The Maxis studio also continues to enhance both the core SimCity game and the online service infrastructure; in the last two weeks, they have increased server capacity by more than 400%, optimized server response times by 40 times, and deployed fixes to address players' direct feedback on game performance.

Starting today, every player that has activated their copy of SimCity will receive an email that will give directions on how to redeem this offer, and you can also find more information on our FAQ. EA will be opening up the redemption portal country-by-country so some of you may see it a little sooner than others. The portal will be live worldwide for everyone to select their game by March 22. We don’t want any of you to miss out on your free game, so please note that you must register your copy of SimCity before March 26, 2013 at 06:59 AM GMT and you must claim your free game by March 31, 2013 at 06.59 GMT.

Here is the list of games that you will be able to choose from once you are able to redeem. It’s a great list of games across the whole EA portfolio, so pick one and add it to your Origin library on us!
