'Sunset' Kickstarter Campaign In Final Stretch

by Rainier on July 16, 2014 @ 12:44 p.m. PDT

Sunset is a first-person exploration of a single penthouse apartment in a fictional tropical republic suffering under an oppressive regime.

Set in the early 1970's, the player, a housekeeper, visits week- by- week and slowly discovers the role of the apartment's eccentric occupant in the civil war — and her own role in his life — as the city erupts around them.

The former philanthropist has been living a secluded life after a military coup had stifled the arts and culture that once aroused his passions. The thoughtful attention of his housekeeper awakens a new love for his country and his people in him. But the ruthless government will not be defeated with a velvet glove. Maybe she can convince him to join the violent resistance movement that terrorizes the capital.

Against the sunset-lit backdrop of a war-torn metropolis, two hearts meet in a fast-paced thriller. Your investigation of a person's belongings creates a level of intimacy never far away from romance. It is up to you, however, to decide how the relationship evolves. Will you be a lover? A fighter? A friend or a traitor?

"We had not expected the Kickstarter to be this successful." admit designers Auriea Harvey and Michaël Samyn. "Our work has often been considered controversial. And even though we intend Sunset to be easily enjoyable, we had no idea if people would think us capable of pulling that off. We're immensely pleased that they seem to do so."

It took 2 days to achieve the initial target of $25,000. And also the one stretch goal, of double that target, was achieved swiftly. All pledges in excess of $50,000 go directly to the freelance collaborators on the project.

"Tale of Tales is just two people," explain Harvey and Samyn. "All our collaborators are freelancers. The more money we can spend on them, the more time they can devote to the project and the more beautiful this Sunset will be."

The team for Sunset is the biggest of any in Tale of Tales' decade long career. Next to founders Auriea Harvey and Michaël Samyn includes Austin Wintory, composer, Kris Force, sound designer, Tina Marie Murray, voice actress, Laura Raines Smith, animator, Jurie Horneman, programmer, Leigh Alexander and Ste Curran, advisers, Stacey Diana Clark, concept artist, Theresa Schlag and Niklas Roth, 3D artists, and a writer who wishes to remain anonymous.
