GOG.com Offers Free Keys For Unplayable Retail Games

by Rainier on April 2, 2015 @ 1:20 p.m. PDT

Got some old PC keys lying around? Soon enough, they may be redeemable for free, DRM-free, on GOG.com.

There are countless retail games out there that don’t work for various reasons: unsupported types of DRM, system incompatibilities and broken features. Starting today, owners of several retail titles originally sold with DRM can get a digital copy of their game completely free at GOG.com: with no DRM as always, compatible with modern operating systems, and with plenty of goodies to boot.

To reclaim a title, gamers simply have to navigate here, and use the keys that originally came with their copy. The first games that can be reclaimed include:

Game editions released only in CIS & Russia territories:

  • Mount & Blade: Warband
  • Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword
  • Eador: Genesis

Game editions released worldwide:

  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

“We have been fighting to free all games from DRM since the very beginning, and this new feature is the next step for us,” says Oleg Klapovsky, GOG.com's VP of Business Development and Operations. “It's not a simple job, but we plan to bring in even more games in the future.”

Additionally six new games are coming to the DRM-free platform today — including two digital distribution exclusives and three weeklong discounts:

  • Galactic Assault: Prisoner of Power (digital distribution exclusive)
  • Sea Dogs (digital distribution exclusive)
  • Wings of Prey Complete
  • Pilot Brothers (-33%)
  • Men of War (-50%)
  • Death to Spies (-50%)
