'Otherland' Coming To Steam Early Access Next Week - Screens

by Rainier on Aug. 17, 2015 @ 1:36 a.m. PDT

Otherland is an Unreal Engine 3 powered massively multiplayer online game, based on the best-selling novels by fantasy author Tad Williams.

The Otherland is being rebooted: After the transition of the project from now defunct studio RealU, development of the MMORPG is back on track.

In Otherland, based on the bestseller novels by Tad Williams, players explore a series of virtual worlds, each with highly diverse graphics but connected via an overarching storyline: The fantasy world “Eight Squared”, the cyber-punk inspired “Bad Sector”, the Asian “Five Isles” and the SciFi planet “Mars”. The “Lambda Mall” functions as the central hub for players to socialize, complete with Bars, shops and personal player apartments.

Thanks to its setting, Otherland features several innovations for MMOs, among them the eDNA of NPCs, Avatars and Items as well as the “MyLand”-system for clans...

Otherland features a gear diversity matching the extensive character customization choices. Each simulation offers distinctive looking gear fitting the setting of the particular game world. On top of that, vendors in the major social hub called Lambda Mall offer additional looks and tons of vanity outfits.
Gear can also be crafted using SOMAforges and various gear can have sockets to be outfitted with a wide range of mods allowing players to further customize their gear’s stats. To craft items, players use various types of a resource named SOMA. SOMA can either be gathered or players can add SOMA Labs to their U|Spaces to grow SOMA on their own.

Otherland will be available on Steam Early Access starting August 26, 2015.

Following more than six years of development, eager players are finally getting a chance to experience the game via Steam's Early Access.  Players will be treated to a completely revamped, visually stunning online game where they can explore the "Multiverse" of virtual worlds based on the popular Tad Williams novels. After two recent closed beta tests, Early Access is the final step in the journey to the official launch of the game in early 2016.

The "reboot" is almost complete: Nearly two years after the transition of the Otherland project from now defunct studio RealU, new developer DRAGO Entertainment is putting the finishing touches on the ambitious Action MMORPG. Almost feature- and content complete, now it is up to the community to test the game in in-depth, provide feedback and thus shape the final product that is to be released early next year.

Despite being in Early Access, Otherland is one of the most advanced titles on the service, a far cry from the Pre-Alpha Versions often put up for sale. Most of the unique features – starting with the eDNA System that allows users to "collect and clone" items and even NPCs up to the Housing and PVP systems – have been fully implemented already. Other features, such as the extensive Clan Land and Clan War Features are far along in development and will be added soon. Further content updates such as new worlds filled with quests, additional battlegrounds and minigames are planned for the upcoming months; all of these features will be taking community feedback into account. Revenues derived from Early Access will flow right back into development, allowing for additional time to balance, optimize and polish the game before the intended Release in early 2016.

"After two closed beta tests we decided against the traditional Open Beta phase and instead opted to go Early Access on Steam because it allows us to better involve the community in the polishing process", commented Lucjan Mikociak, CEO of DRAGO Entertainment. "We have come a long way since taking on the project nearly two years ago, and as a small independent developer we love to communicate with our community and appreciate their feedback and ideas, as we are determined to make sure that Otherland will not officially launch until it is ready."

Otherland features four distinctively different classes each being able to take on two different roles.

  • The Warrior: The Warrior is a heavy melee combat class. Large two-handed weapons, massive armours and a specialised set of abilities allow the Warrior to not only dish out damage all around, but also take significant of damage.
  • The Assassin: The Assassin is a light melee combat class. Assassins specialise in sneaking in the shadows and attacking opponents when least expected. A wide range of abilities and attacks support a fast combat pace to control the fight and finish opponents before the assassin can be harmed.
  • The Marksman: The Marksman is a ranged class specialising in using a wide range of rifles and bows to deliver targeted damage from far away. The Marksman is also equipped with skills to keep enemies at bay by planting traps and knocking back approaching threats.
  • The Energizer: The Energizer is a ranged class specializing in energy manipulation. Their weapons perform the dual function of both healing other players and delivering high damage to enemies. The Energizer has the ability to convert their own health to healing energy and skills to tag multiple targets allowing for both group heals and non-targeted damage.

Key Features:

  • Quest-driven MMORPG with 4 character classes in PvE and PvP
  • Action-based combat with WASD-controls and Mouse-aiming
  • Outstanding virtual reality scenario with 5 uniquely designed worlds and a strong story, based on Tad Williams' bestselling novels
  • eDNA: Players craft items and clone NPCs based on their virtual DNA
