'Metal Gear Online' (ALL) Cloaked in Silence DLC Gets Dated

by Rainier on March 1, 2016 @ 3:21 p.m. PST

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the latest installment in the MGS franchise, powered by the new FOX engine.

Taking place nine years after the events of MGSV: Ground Zeroes and the fall of Mother Base, Snake a.k.a. Big Boss, awakes from a near decade-long coma. The game resumes the story in 1984, with the Cold War still as the backdrop, which continues to shape a global crisis. Snake’s journey takes him into a world where he is driven by a need for revenge and the pursuit of a shadow group, XOF.

With its open-world design, photo realistic visual fidelity and feature-rich game design, MGS V: The Phantom Pain will leave its mark as one of the hallmarks in the gaming industry for its cinematic storytelling, heavy themes, and immersive tactical gameplay.

In addition to the franchise's returning characters, such as Snake, Kazuhira Miller, Ocelot, and Emmerich, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will introduce all new characters to the Metal Gear universe. The storyline will focus on dark themes that portray the ugliness and tragedy of war, as a legendary hero falls from grace.

Metal Gear Online is a dedicated multi-player mode that segues into elements of the main game and will be included with the single player campaign in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain at no extra cost.

Metal Gear Online represents the third iteration of the popular multiplayer game, newly redesigned with the familiar gameplay and aesthetic styling of its companion single-player campaign Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. With a focus on Tactical Team Operations, the game features a ‘class system’ that more uniquely defines the strengths and abilities of player characters on the battle field. Key characters from the series including Venom Snake and Ocelot will also make appearances in the anticipated multiplayer feature.

Entitled ‘Cloaked in Silence’, the new content will be released on will be available on March 15, adds new maps, a new character and additional content to the multi-player experience.

  • Coral Complex: A dedicated Motherbase environment, allowing players to access tall towers and use storage containers and other internal areas as cover for tactical advantage. Coral Complex mixes open areas and a myriad of hiding opportunities.
  • Rust Palace: Set within Afghanistan, the Rust Palace is a large multi-level building. The skeletal nature of the decrepit ruin means that cover is scarce, while the internal areas are rich in dusty rooms and high-up sniping positions.
  • Azure Mountain: An outdoor plain under Africa’s baking sky. A small cluster of buildings offers scant cover, with only derelict walls and occasional scrubland surrounding the massive rock known locally as the Cradle of Spirits.

Metal Gear Online also sees the debut of Quiet as a playable character. A buddy character familiar from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Quiet is a legendary sniper who can take out distant targets with excellent accuracy, Quiet’s movement speed is extremely fast and allows for unique jumping abilities over high steps where a player would usually need a ladder. She can also temporarily cloak her visibility while sprinting to activate a boost in movement speed.

The new ‘Cloaked in Silent’ DLC also adds the APPEAL ACTION feature, which triggers a unique character pose known as APPEAL ACTION. Players can preset up to five different slots per character with additional APPEAL ACTION packs are available for purchase in store.

Released in tandem to the DLC, a free update to Metal Gear Online includes a brand new competitive mission, SABOTAGE. Attackers must destroy or fulton an enemy missile before the round expires; but to access the missile, attackers must first hack into the Terminals to deactivate the Electromagnetic (EM) Barrier that is protecting it. Once the Terminals are hacked and the EM Barrier is deactivated, defenders can choose to reactivate the Barrier or protect the Missile.

Metal Gear Onlinewill also feature a new mode known as SURVIVAL, which will arrive on April 7. In SURVIVAL, teams of players compete for the highest win streak to achieve greater rewards. All players can try out the new maps for free in SURVIVAL matches, with a limit of 10 attempts per week (the number of free available attempts will be reset every Tuesday during the scheduled maintenance). Players who purchased the ‘Cloaked in Silence’ Expansion Pack will have unlimited access to SURVIVAL mode and the new maps.
