'Disney Infinity' (ALL) Franchise Discontinued, Avalanche Software Shut down

by Rainier on May 11, 2016 @ 1:49 a.m. PDT

Disney Infinity 3.0 allows players to experience original adventures in some of their favorite Disney and Pixar worlds, and to build their own using the power of their imagination.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition introduces an all-new, 3-D Toy Box Hub that will make it easier for players to choose from a wider selection of gameplay experiences - including platform, racing, and farming simulation games. Two new multiplayer Toy Box Expansion Games will bring action-adventure gameplay in Toy Box Takeover and kart racing in Toy Box Speedway, where kids and families can play with popular Disney, Disney•Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters together in a structured setting.

The writing has been on the wall for a few months now, ever since Disney decided to focus on adding new playsets/characters to Disney Infinity 3.0 and not work on sequels, as well the fact that Disney Interactive would not be present at E3 next month. Still the announcement came as a surprise that Disney is shelving the Disney Infinity franchise, shutting down developer Avalanche Software and quitting the game publishing business altogether in favor of licensing to 3rd parties.

By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you—our fans—and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game.

Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.

So what’s next for Disney Infinity? We have two final retail releases coming, including three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month, and the Finding Dory Play Set launching in June.

And as we turn to the next chapter in our story, I want to thank everyone who helped bring Disney Infinity to life, particularly Disney’s Glendale-based production and publishing teams, our external development partners, and of course the incredible Avalanche team for their tireless dedication to this project.

But most of all, I want to again thank you for making Disney Infinity a part of your lives—and for adding to the Disney legacy by being a part of this community.

All figures and Power Discs from the 1.0 and 2.0 editions of Disney Infinity are compatible with Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition in the enhanced Toy Box and, for the first time, Power Discs will be sold in labeled franchise-specific packs of four. Additional Disney, Disney•Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars figures and Play Sets will be available...
