'Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse' (3DS) Shows Off Its Demons, DLC Details - Trailer

by Rainier on Aug. 3, 2016 @ 7:30 p.m. PDT

Overlapping the story of the original SMTIV, the upcoming game focuses on a Hunter cadet protagonist who gets killed by one of the demons treating post-apocalyptic Tokyo as their personal playground.

However, the mysterious god Dagda resurrects the protagonists in exchange for his fealty, and sets him on a perilous path that treads the fine line between peace and anarchy. Is Dagda simply an opportunistic lesser god or is he part of something much bigger?

The plot of Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse overlaps with Shin Megami Tensei IV (and features some familiar characters), but no previous experience with the original is required!

With Tokyo being ground zero for scheming gods and monstrous demons, only the strongest and craftiest can survive in the former metropolis turned literal hell on earth. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse has a varied cast of characters that players need to utilize properly in order to endure the harsh realities -- mostly the very high possibility of death around every corner -- of post-apocalyptic life.

"But wait!" you'll say. Why is the name different than the Japanese release? Well, we have a little bit of insight on that

It wouldn't be a Shin Megami Tensei game without plenty of demons. Thankfully, Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse has a series record of 450+ demons from various mythologies to fight, fuse, or recruit. If you're new to the series and this sounds a little complicated, don't fret. Collecting demons is ADDICTING, and it's pretty much like that monster catching game everyone's been playing on their phone... except, no joke, its way better.

When encountering demons in Tokyo such as the fabulous Napaea or strong Centaur, players can fight, negotiate, or flee. While annihilating every single demon may be the knee jerk reaction, negotiating with them opens up a wealth of options that can greatly benefit the party. Choosing to talk to demons opens up a dialogue tree that gives players to opportunity to recruit them or receive items/bonuses. A successfully recruited demon can be summoned to fight alongside the protagonist, but if negotiations fail demons will happily tear you to shreds.

Once a demon has been added to the party, they'll gain experience, new abilities, and stronger attributes with every victory in battle. The protagonists can also learn powerful new skills from demons that level up, but that's not even the best part about demon collection. Using the Cathedral of Shadows, monsters can be fused together to create even stronger ones! Mix and match or use recommended formulas to create the demon of your dreams (or nightmares)!
