'Northgard' Early Access Update Adds New Faction, Creatures And More

by Rainier on Oct. 19, 2017 @ 9:27 a.m. PDT

Northgard is a strategy game deeply ingrained with Norse mythology in which brave explorers have discovered a new world filled with mystery and danger, where players are tasked to help them survive and thrive in a hostile land.

After years of tireless explorations, brave Vikings have discovered a new land filled with mystery, danger and riches: Northgard.

The boldest Northmen have set sail to explore and conquer these new shores, bring fame to their Clan and write history through conquest, trading, or devotion to the Gods. That is, if they can survive the dire wolves and undead warriors roaming the land, befriend or defeat the giants, and survive winters so harsh even the boldest Vikings will shiver!

To conquer the new world and become its master, the explorers have different strategies to lead their clan to greatness: explore, trade, or defeat your enemies in battle.

In Northgard, the player takes control of a Viking clan who arrive on unknown and unforgiving shores, where they have to establish their village, gather resources, grow their society and defeat their opponents. In their quest to conquer a new and mysterious world, clans will face off against undead warriors, giants, dragons and other foes while surviving the harshest environments.

With this new update, players have the chance to encounter Kobolds for the first time. This neutral faction occupies random tiles on the map, guarding the precious resources they contain, and can either be a formidable foe or a generous ally. Besides Kobolds, players may also stumble upon the mystical hawk Vedrfolnir, badly hurt after its encounter with the ancient undead warriors, the Draugar. Once healed, this fantastical creature will wander around Northgard for a year and scout the surroundings, revealing up to six new areas to the faction that helped it.

While exploring the lands of Northgard, players can also discover and colonize three new tiles. These new environments include Thor Wrath which provides additional attack power to any clan controlling it, or Geyser, giving a happiness bonus and a reduction in wood consumption to its owner during winter. Finally, Vikings settling on the new Pond tiles can now also fish there to feed their clan.

Further details can be found in the latest patch notes.

Northgard is available for download through Steam Early Access for $19.99.
