'Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire' Closed Beta Available for Backers - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Nov. 15, 2017 @ 5:47 p.m. PST

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is an isometric, party-based RPG, that improves upon the rich narrative, beautiful environments, and intricate, tactical combat from the original.

Inspired by classic titles such as Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of AmnIcewind Dale, and Planescape: TormentPillars of Eternity II: Deadfire will take players on a second fantastic journey to the world of Eora, this time to the vast, uncharted, Deadfire Archipelago where they will fight for their souls as they hunt down a god.

Eothas has returned. The god of light and rebirth was thought dead, but he now inhabits the stone titan that sat buried under your keep, Caed Nua, for millennia. Ripping his way out of the ground, he destroys your stronghold and leaves you at the brink of death. To save your soul, you must track down the wayward god and demand answers - answers which could throw mortals and the gods themselves into chaos.

Players travel the far-flung region of the titular Deadfire Archipelago by ship, where they will discover new races, visit exotic islands, defend their ships against pirates, and, most importantly, choose their allies carefully, as there are powerful factions to encounter at nearly every port.

The closed beta will allow players to try out Deadfire’snew features, such as multiclassing and its overhauled combat system. Obsidian is committed to revealing new features over the next few months, giving those who opted in to the Backer Beta an early peek at the world of the Deadfire. Backers with access to the Backer Beta are encouraged to provide feedback, helping Obsidian make Pillars II an even better experience.

“It’s no surprise, but we love RPGs here at Obsidian. So, it’s awesome to be able to bring the beta of Deadfire to our backers this far out from launch.” commented Feargus Urquhart, CEO Obsidian, “Showing off all the new things we have added to Pillars of Eternity over the last two years is both exciting, and a bit scary. However, it’s key to who we are as a developer to find out what our backers think, and then using that feedback to make Deadfire an even more amazing game.”

The Backer Beta is available to those who pledged at higher tiers during the original Fig campaign, or purchased it separately as an add-on, which is still available. Backers will have the opportunity to choose either Steam or GOG as their preferred platform for the Backer Beta. Those who want to get in on the closed beta can still do so by adding the Backer Beta to their pledges on Obsidian’s official Pillars of Eternity backer portal at http://eternity.obsidian.net/backer.

Building on the gameplay of the first Pillars of Eternity, every aspect of Deadfire has been improved and expanded. Vastly more detailed graphics, deeper game mechanics, increased player choice and reactivity, a new companion relationship system, streamlined combat, and an entirely new, hand-crafted adventure make Deadfire the ultimate cRPG experience.

Key Features:

  • EXPLORE DEADFIRE – Voyage by land and sea across the myriad islands of Deadfire to discover new cultures and environments. Resolve a multi-layered conflict between the locals, ambitious trading companies, and bands of fierce pirates while following in the footsteps of Eothas.
  • A LIVING, BREATHING WORLD – The people of Deadfire have lives of their own, jobs to do, and appointments to keep. They will carry on with their affairs even when you’re not watching. Quests may even present different opportunities depending on when and where characters and environments are approached.
  • NEW COMPANIONS – While some familiar faces will be returning, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire will also welcome a fresh crop of travelers with stories of their own. Companions are tightly intertwined with the fate of Eothas, Deadfire, and will change based on the player's choices over the course of the story.
  • PILLARS OF ETERNITY REACTIVITY – Continue the story you began as the Watcher of Caed Nua in Pillars of Eternity and see how your decisions and actions in the Dyrwood persist in Deadfire.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire will launch on Windows PC, Mac and Linux in early 2018.
