'Beholder' Blissful Sleep DLC Coming Next Month

by Rainier on April 18, 2017 @ 11:34 a.m. PDT

You're a State-installed Landlord in a totalitarian State. You must spy on tenants, peep, eavesdrop and profile! You must report on anyone capable of plotting subversion against the State. You MUST! But WILL you?

Inspired heavily by George Orwell’s groundbreaking 1984 the philosophical narrative of Beholder, opens up questions around issues of social and moral values. If you are given the power to destroy privacy, should you follow the orders of the giver? Or should you treat those that you spy on the way they deserve? Who decides what is deserved? And what if two different people deserve to be saved, but one has to go? Who will you choose?

Your primary task is to covertly watch your tenants and eavesdrop on their conversations. You must BUG their apartments while they're away, SEARCH their belongings for whatever can threaten the authority of the State, and PROFILE them for your superiors. You must also REPORT anyone capable of violating the laws or plotting subversive activities against the State to the authorities.

You are a cog in a totalitarian machine!
But you can still choose to cling to your humanity and empathize with others.

Will you report the suspicious activities of a father and orphan his children? Or will you withhold the details about his illegal activities and give him a chance to make things right? You may also choose to blackmail him to acquire the money your family desperately needs.

As you play the game, you'll interact with many characters and complete dozens of quests. You'll also make decisions that will affect the way the story unfolds. This will lead to one of several game endings - the ending you have earned!

Keeping the totalitarian atmosphere of the original Beholder, the DLC transports players back in time, telling the pre-story of the events that happened in the house before The Ministry of Introductions appointed Carl as the snitching landlord, who is torn by moral choices on a daily basis.

“After the successful launch of Beholder last year, we saw how involved people got into the narrative, so we decided to start working on a DLC pack introducing the backstory of the original game,” said Evgeny Sister, Producer at Alawar. “As a cog in a totalitarian machine player faces an unrelenting dystopian reality: the laws are oppressive, people are under complete surveillance and privacy is non-existent. They must decide whether to keep ‘the machine’ running smoothly or to follow their gut and choose a more ethical course of action.”

The Beholder: Blissful Sleep DLC introduces several deeper, more complicated character backgrounds and shocking story twists taking place in the same Krushvice 6 house before the original storyline begins. The State laws have become more oppressive than ever, disrupting the lives of the people and leaving them miserable and in search of salvation. Players continue to operate under strict totalitarian rules, every day making moral choices that eventually lead to one of several story endings available.

The DLC is set to launch on Steam tentatively May 18th, 2017.
