'Akiba's Beat' (ALL) Recreates Tokyo's Akihabara District - Screens

by Rainier on April 19, 2017 @ 10:45 a.m. PDT

Set in a true-to-life recreation of Tokyo’s Akihabara ward, players will take control of a party of characters led by protagonist Asahi Tachibana as they seek to rid the town of anything out of sync with reality.

A spiritual successor to Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed, Akiba's Beat is a modern-day satirical spin on a classic Japanese RPG formula and plunges you into the heart of the mecca of Otaku culture, but all is not as it seems!

A haven for music fans, the go-to place for idol obsessives, a one stop shop for household electronics – over the years, Akihabara has meant many things to many people. Now, with dark forces at play, the memories, hopes and dreams of Akihabara’s colorful denizens are becoming a reality. Their delusions are taking physical form and with that, threatening the very fabric of time and reality!

Akihabara, perhaps the most famous district of Tokyo, is a place where technology and culture collide and create wondrous new experiences for residents and tourists alike. AKIBA’S BEAT developer, ACQUIRE, are situated right in the heart of Akihabara and have gone to great pains to recreate the world-famous district of Tokyo.

Every shop and sight in Akiba is represented and everyone who has been there will be able to walk the streets of Electric Town and recognize where they are, while those who have not yet been can familiarize themselves with the geek and gaming mecca quite intimately.

Akihabara has changed many times over the years: after World War II, it served as a post-war black market before it transformed into the musical centre of Tokyo. It then became the famous Electric Town before it turned into the gaming heart of Tokyo, the arcade mecca that we’re all familiar with. It’s arguable that Akihabara has changed again, becoming more focused on geek culture, the internet and memes than strictly videogames.

People are drawn to different incarnations of Akiba, with different ideas of what Akihabara is and should be. And recently, within this ever-changing Tokyo town, people’s desires, dreams and dismays have begun to manifest themselves in reality as delusions, with a mysterious man in an ostentatious hat surveying the changes from afar. No one but a select few chosen ones are even able to tell that anything is amiss, and it is up to them to do something about it!

Stuck in a never-ending time loop, it is up to you take on the freakish manifestations of Akihabara in an action RPG like no other! Battle to the Beat, timing your actions to the background music to deal the most damage.

There are two sides to the gameplay: first, players will wander the streets and question the quirky Akihabara residents on a variety of subjects related to the mystery at hand, ultimately unlocking fantasy-themed dungeons known as “Delusionscapes” which are infested with monsters called “deluseons.” These deluseons are encountered on the map and fought in a party-based action battle system, putting players’ skills to the test and creating a uniquely challenging experience that seamlessly blends a real-life locale with the secret delusory world of its residents’ innermost desires.

Meet Electric Town’s colorful characters and form your best team to take on their collective imaginations.

Akiba's Beat is headed to the PS4 and Vita for $49.99 and $39.99 MSRP respectively on May 16, 2017 (May 19 in Europe).
