'We Happy Few' (ALL) to Become Feature Film

by Rainier on April 3, 2017 @ 12:32 p.m. PDT

Set in a drug-fueled, retro-futuristic city in an alternative 1960s England, you’ll have to blend in with its other inhabitants, who don’t take kindly to people who don’t abide by their not-so-normal rules.

Set in an dystopian 1960s English city, We Happy Few is the tale of a group of slightly terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful denial. To find your way out of Wellington Wells and reconstruct the past, you’ll have to blend in with its citizens, who don’t take kindly to those who don’t abide by their not-so-normal rules.

Gold Circle Films and DJ2 Entertainment Partner to Adapt Compulsion Games’ We Happy Few as Feature Film.

WHF is being produced by Paul Brooks' Gold Circle Films and dj2 Entertainment's Dmitri M. Johnson and Dan Jevons, with dj2's Stephan Bugaj executive producing.

dj2 saw the video game before its release to fan and critical acclaim, and was immediately drawn to its unique world, aesthetic and characters. Guillaume Provost, head of the game's developer, Compulsion Games, says, "Dmitri, Stephan and Dan approached us enthusiastically and with really solid ideas about how to adapt our game to film, while retaining its menace, dark humor, and central themes. We're gratified at how they and Gold Circle have taken to the project."

"Our commitment," says Johnson, "is to make a movie that remains true to and expands on its great source material." Gold Circle's Paul Brooks adds, "As a Brit and a fan of shows like The Prisoner, the game's social satire resonated with me. I wanted this project immediately and am truly pleased a relationship with dj2 and their Business Affairs exec, Howard Bliss, helped make that possible."

Gold Circle and dj2 are currently out to writers for the project.

dj2 is currently executive producing Life Is Strange, a television series based on the videogame, with Legendary Entertainment, producing the Sleeping Dogs feature film with Original Film and Donnie Yen (Star Wars, IP Man) attached to star, as well as co-producing the Sonic, the Hedgehog motion picture. Several other projects based on videogame, comic books, and original concepts, are in various stages of development. dj2 is represented by APA.

Key Features

  • A procedurally generated world: Each time you die or beat the game, your next adventure through Wellington Wells will be different. Forget about relying on the city's layout to escape!
  • A sophisticated suspicion system: The inhabitants of Wellington Wells expect you to behave in very specific ways—if they suspect you're not taking your Joy, they'll quickly identify you as a Downer.
  • Frenzied combat: Downers aren't very popular in Wellington Wells. In fact, Wellies tend to get a bit violent whenever one walks by.
  • Twisted survival mechanics: In this urban setting, avoiding the Wellies' fury often means hiding in plain sight.
  • An elaborate crafting system: Salvage supplies and Joy-tainted food to stay alive, but be careful not to overdose!
