'The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeon' Announced, Seeks Crowd Funding - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Nov. 15, 2018 @ 1:11 a.m. PST

The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeon is the video game reinvention of the old-school gamebooks that were popular in the 1980s, most specifically Deathtrap Dungeon.

Enter, if you dare, a vast tournament labyrinth for a game of high-stakes decisions, where your educated guesses could lead to grave peril or fantastic rewards. In this single player roleplaying game, explore, fight monsters, craft items, solve puzzles, outwit opponents, and skill up your hero to be the first to conquer Deathtrap Dungeon.

Ideal for both veteran roleplayers looking for convenient solo play and new players looking for an easy intro to the classic pen-and-paper RPG experience, The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeon uses the Storybook Hero RPG engine to bring the best parts of "old-school" roleplaying to life in a modern, cinematic way.

With the convenience of a gamebook, replayability like a survival roguelike, and the wide wonder of pen and paper roleplaying, this is a revolutionary “Novel” RPG where your actions quite literally write the book as you play.

Sentient Play has teamed up with Ian Livingstone (co-founder of the the Fighting Fantasy series, and was president of Eidos) and Iain McCaig (the original designers of Deathtrap Dungeon, and known for designing Queen Amidala and Darth Maul, and was principle artist for four more Star Wars films, two Avengers films, Guardians of the Galaxy and more ), to create The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeon,  the first sequel to that storyline since the 80s.

“We’re a small team, proud of how far we’ve taken The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeon, but now it’s time to call in some specialists—amazing artists, writers, cartographers, animators, and developers to help us take our game to the level so that we can deliver to you the game we have imagined. With your help, we’ll bring The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeon to life in a truly original and amazing way,” said Brad Becker, founder of Sentient Play.

In The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeon, players are posed a challenge: “Enter the world’s deadliest competition: 30 days to conquer a labyrinth designed to kill you—filled with monsters, traps, and ruthless competitors. Knowledge is your secret weapon: clues from your skills and equipment are all that stand between you and sudden death as you move from encounter to encounter, finding your own unique solution to each through wits...or force. Strive to survive and gain enough experience, skills, and equipment to become The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeon," said Brad Becker, CEO and Founder, Sentient Games.

The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeon is currently on Fig with a goal of $200K USD.

Train, craft, trade, explore, fight, and uncover secrets to become powerful and experienced enough to be the first to make it all the way through the new expanded Deathtrap Dungeon. You have one month to master the dungeon, so use your time wisely: decide when to train and craft items, and when to journey into the dungeon to fulfill quests or attempt a final run all the way through the dungeon.

Key Features:

  • All the Good RPG Stuff - Loot, exploration, quests, combat, puzzles, character customization, skills progression, equipment, crafting, base-building and more.
  • Continual Progress, Increasing Depth: Constant progress  and unlocks from leveling up, recruiting new mentors, learning new skills and crafting recipes.
  • Creative Solutions and Approaches: Use creativity, wit, and strategy to overcome encounters in multiple realistic ways.
  • Old-School Art: Black & white hand-drawn illustrations and maps bring back the gamecocks and roleplaying games of the early 80s.
  • Cinematic Reading: Ink swirls, illustrations move, and a dynamic soundtrack adapts to what’s happening in the story. Art comes to life.
  • Learning: More critical decisions come later in the game when you already understand what’s going on. The virtual Gamemaster handles all the record-keeping and calculation behind the scenes, delivering narrative and illustrations so you can stay immersed in the story world.
  • Ease to Start, Pause, Pick Back Up: You already know how to “operate” a book. Pause for real world interruptions and later just pick right up where you left off—everything you’ve done has written a story you can reread. Play for five hours or five minutes; pause to deal with real-life.

The Hero of Deathtrap Dungeonis currently in development for PC and Mac and scheduled for Q4 2019.
