The Golden Joystick Awards are back! Marking 36 years of celebrating everything we love about the world’s most dynamic creative industry.

The winners in 23 categories were announced today at the award ceremony held at London’s Bloomsbury Big Top and live streamed on Twitch.

Award highlights include:

  • Fortnite Battle Royale (Epic Games) wins Best Competitive Game and Ultimate Game of the Year
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar Games) wins the Critics’ Choice Award
  • God of War (SIE Santa Monica Studio) wins five awards including PlayStation Game of the Year, Best Storytelling, Best Visual Design and Best Audio, with SIE Santa Monica Studio also winning Studio of the Year
  • Subnautica (Unknown Worlds) wins PC Game of the Year, with developer Unknown Worlds also winning the Breakthrough Award
  • Hidetaka Miyazaki accepts the Lifetime Achievement Award on stage
  • Xbox Adaptive Controller wins the Outstanding Contribution Award

Daniel Dawkins, Global Editor-In-Chief, GamesRadar+ said: "2018 has been an incredible year for videogames. We have had year-defining blockbuster hits such as Fortnite Battle Royale, Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of War, sitting alongside indie breakthrough games such as Subnautica and Dead Cells. This year’s Golden Joystick Awards received a record number of voters, casting millions of votes, and we are not surprised to see all these games being recognised for their inventive brilliance and the sheer joy they bring to so many people."

“We are extremely honored to have awarded Hidetaka Miyazaki the Lifetime Achievement award, a man whose games are widely considered among the most influential of his generation. We are delighted that he could join us on-stage to accept the honour from fantasy luminaries Ian Livingstone CBE and Steve Jackson whose works were so influential on Miyazaki’s distinctive style.”

Hidetaka Miyazaki, CEO and Director, FromSoftware said: “To receive such a prestigious award from the Golden Joysticks fills me with great surprise and a sense of great honour. I am tremendously grateful to everyone who has played, enjoyed and appreciated our games. Rather than myself, this award goes to the many people who have built these games with me, and shared their passion with me over the years.”

Dawkins continues: “The Xbox Adaptive Controller received the ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award on the night. The controller which launched in September 2018 is designed to meet the needs of gamers with limited mobility and has been widely praised by the industry. Our judges are delighted to recognise this landmark contribution to gaming alongside Microsoft’s wider efforts to promote diversity and inclusion across their Xbox ecosystem.”

Evelyn Thomas, Microsoft’s Accessibility Programme Manager for Xbox said: “It’s an honour and privilege to receive the Outstanding Contribution award for the Xbox Adaptive Controller at the Golden Joysticks. It’s a product that was designed with inclusivity at the heart and was formed through collaborations with amazing partners and individuals. We continue to be moved by the recognition it has received, helping it to stand out as a true first-of-its-kind - in gaming and beyond.”
