Set in the waning days of the Roman Empire, Jon Shafer's At the Gates is a strategy game that casts you as the leader of a barbarian tribe, ready to fill the power vacuum left by a great power in decline.

It is the dark, brutal days of late antiquity. The Roman Empire is collapsing and the end of the world seems to be at hand. As civilization itself crumbles, you lead a fledgling barbarian kingdom which seeks to fill this vacuum of power and establish itself as the new master of Europe!

But it won’t be easy. Ambitious rival kingdoms will stand in your way, and while the Romans may be weaker than they once were, they are still proud and formidable foes. However, external enemies are only one concern, and in these hard times even the land itself can be hostile...

In At the Gates you must compete not only against other nations, but with an environment that does not eagerly feed your people and armies. The resources of the world you are constantly depleting, requiring you to move your tribe in search of new ones - or to pillage those of your neighbors.

Will you be ready for a long, hot summer that scorches your fields, or a winter that freezes the river that once served as a wall to fend off the Huns? "Jon Shafer’s At the Gates" features seasons that transform not just the world, but the strategic options available to you.

"I've always been driven to innovate with my games and At the Gates is no exception", Shafer said. "The genre has gotten a bit stale but it still has enormous potential, and that's what I'm aiming to tap into by mixing roguelike elements into the classic 4X grand strategy formula."

Key Features

  • An Evolving Map - Seasons and weather dramatically transform the landscape around you. The river that served as a barrier in the summer might become a highway for your enemies!
  • Manage Clan Personalities - Each of your clans has unique traits and desires. Choose what you do with them carefully.
  • Roguelike Elements - Resources run out, and you need to always be on the lookout for more. Your neighbors can be immensely strong and require tip-toeing around. It won't be easy, or even fair.
  • Watercolor Art Style - A beautiful watercolor landscape serves as a canvas for your clever economic and military strategies.
  • Tooltips-in-Tooltips! - AtG features a revolutionary user interface which utilizes "tooltips-in-tooltips" for the very first time, making it vastly easier to learn the game without sacrificing any complexity.

Conifer Games will release Jon Shafer's At the Gates on PC (Steam) and the official AtG website on January 23rd, 2019.
