'Through the Woods' Comes To Xbox One Tomorrow, PS4 Next Week - Trailer

by Rainier on May 1, 2018 @ 6:37 a.m. PDT

Through the Woods is a third-person psychological horror game set in a forest on the western shore of Norway about a mother and her missing son.

Set on the coast of Norway, Through the Woods tells the story of the extremes a mother would go to in order to save her child. In a deeply personal narrative, the mother’s relationship with her son is gradually revealed, as she realizes what perils her young son might be facing and what is at stake. All that matters to her is finding her son and making sure he is safe. Deep in the dark woods, on her own, with many obstacles to tackle, she fights not only with the forest and its creatures, but also with demons from the past buried deep inside.

Equipped with only a flashlight, players must help Karen navigate immersive and foreboding woods, decrepit cabins and pitch-black caverns while simultaneously avoiding grotesque mythological abominations as they lead her through the awful recounting of events.

Through the Woods immerses the player in the mysterious dark atmosphere of a deep forest, lit only by the moon and the cone of one’s flashlight. The forest lives a different life at night, with mythological creatures roaming the woods, making every encounter potentially a deadly one. The biggest element of fear is the unknown. It seemingly materializes from the darkness. Unidentifiable sounds penetrate the silence and the occasional hint of movement may be spotted in the shadows.

Listening is key to surviving this perilous journey, as often times what dangers lurk in the shadows are attracted to the protagonist’s flashlight.  When the flashlight is off, the volume in the game increases and the direction from which the sound originates becomes more readily apparent.  Through the Woods also employs dynamic narration, so the conversation between the interrogator and mother will change based upon the player’s actions.

Through the Woods will be released for Xbox One and PS4 on 2nd May and 8th May 2018 respectively.

Through the Woods tells a story of a mother and her missing son. Through reactive narration, the player experiences the mother’s re-telling of the events surrounding her son's disappearance. It is the path of a terrified woman who is forcing herself to cross this terrible place for the sole purpose of finding her son in a setting heavily influenced by Norse mythology and Norwegian folk tales.

With Through the Woods, Antagonist have captured the feeling of the forest as they saw it as children, with all the frightening and mysterious feelings of roaming the woods alone. This is coupled with a powerful story and high quality sound design that acts as a core mechanic in the darkness of the forest. Through the Woods is a profound experience that delivers the feeling of loneliness and loss in a terrifying place.

As audio is essential to the story telling, Antagonist has recruited a world class sound team whose resumes cite voice-acting on Telltale Games’ Walking Dead series and two Official U.K. Top 40 singles.  Antagonist is also collaborating with Funcom, developer of The Secret World and Age of Conan, to record motion-capture for multiple characters.

Key Features:

  • Dynamic narration for the dialogue that tells the story in the present, putting the player’s actions into the past tense
  • Environments and story inspired by Norwegian art and nature, and Norse mythology
  • Heavy focus on audio design as part of the core mechanic
  • Creative use of light and darkness, forcing your mind to play tricks on you
  • A profound experience that will leave you feeling as if waking from a nightmare
