Leaping from the pages of the Arabian Nights, adventure awaits in the accursed City of Brass – a place of legend beneath the sand, filled with danger and reward. Infested with mischievous spirits and deadly traps, its shifting streets are brimming with the wealth of a nation.
Set in a mythological metropolis undone by its love of gold, City of Brass follows a cunning thief on a heist to obtain fabled treasure hidden in the heart of the opulent ruins. Armed with a bullwhip and blade, players will lash-and-slash their way through the legions of damned souls that haunt this legendary labyrinth while pilfering relics and other riches contained within its walls.
The rhythmic interplay between these tools gives the experience a fluid feeling as melee bleeds into movement. The versatile whip is used not only to disarm, trip, and stun enemies but allows players to swing to safety or obtain objects that otherwise would be out of reach. The whip also has the ability to turn City of Brass’ dangerous environment against itself. Players can wield it to manipulate hazards from a safe distance and spring deadly traps on unsuspecting enemies.
With shifting streets that ensure no two playthroughs are ever the same, players will need to be tenacious and make good use of their knowledge from past runs to press further into the stronghold if they want to claim the city’s ultimate prize and perhaps even reverse the curse.
To ensure the challenge is tailored to all players, City of Brass features a Blessings & Burdens system, which can make the experience much easier or do quite the opposite. These optional modifiers can tweak everything from player health and damage output to item costs, ensuring City of Brass is tuned everyone’s needs and desires. This system also extends to Mixer, Microsoft’s next generation streaming service, where viewers can interact with live-streamers by griefing them with additional enemy spawns or helping out with extra gold or healing items.
City of Brass bolsters its arsenal today with the “Fortunes Rivals” update.
Three new characters have joined the quest to claim the fabled treasures awaiting at the heart of the city. The Traveler, Soldier, and Brigand all have their own backstory, weapons, and playstyles and inject new life into City of Brass.
The Soldier enters the city walls with a spear that can be used both to stab and hurl at undead foes. Meanwhile, The Brigand brings throwing knives to the fight and compensates for his weaker constitution with an increase in movement speed.
In addition to their starting loadout, characters will find distinct weapons and combat-modifying relics along the journey, like the multi-pronged “Trident of Puncturing” or enemy-freezing “Skewer of Chilling,” which help make each run feel special and play out differently from the last.
As well as adding new characters and gear, “Fortunes Rivals” allows players to select the whip and blade-wielding starting character’s gender, offering players another choice regardless of if they’ve earned enough ranks to unlock The Traveler, Soldier, or Brigand. Other changes include gameplay tweaks based on player feedback and Japanese localization.
"City of Brass is a special experience and we’re happy to continue supporting the game and our lovely community with the ‘Fortunes Rivals’ update,” said Ed Orman, co-founder and designer, Uppercut Games. “These new characters and gear introduce a fresh sense of depth and variety to the experience and we look forward to seeing players explore City of Brass in new ways.”

- The algorithms that create each level are tweaked to generate a logically laid out cityscape of interconnected chambers, courtyards and corridors.
